I bought Stitch and Bitch, knitted half a scarf during a 14hr flight, and decided knitting is way too tedious for me. That happened 4.5 years ago and I just gave the half scarf to my mom so she could unravel it and use the wool. She is really into knitting.

My aunt taught me to knit. I haven't tried hard enough to teach myself to crochet from videos.

Ive taught a lot of people to knit and generally is pretty quick and really nice to actually see someone do it. There are different ways to handle yarn tension while knitting and I think it's worth it to learn the European way even though it's harder at first.

My great grandmother taught me to knit when I was little. I probably stopped by middle school and picked back up during college. At this point I haven't done anything in about a year but look forward to getting back into it as the kids get older & I slowly have free time again!

Taught myself some basic crocheting from you tube......I am not good at crocheting at all! Hah. I find it so much harder.

My mom taught me to crochet as a kid, and I picked it back up in my 20s through YouTube videos. I still use YouTube to learn new stitches and techniques. My mom learned to knit from a friend of hers who is an expert knitter, and then she taught me. I still need YouTube to start a knitting project. I prefer crochet, probably because I'm so much more comfortable with it.

I learned to knit using the book "Stitch and Bitch"

I learned crochet years later using a lot of youtube videos. I'm also in a meetup group that meets once a month and people often ask each other questions there as they're getting started.

Craftsy.com has a lot of on demand classes for reasonable prices. I think your first one is usually half off, you can watch at your own pace, and keep the class to return to for reference. I've heard really good reviews of the teachers there.

I took a class at Joanns and then went to community knitting circles in case I had questions. In case I'm trying something new or get stuck, I look at youtube videos. Have some books but have a hard time reading/deciphering them.

I first learned how to crochet in craft class in elementary school and knitting from my mom and grandmother. Then I didn't do either for a long, long time. I restarted crocheting when on mat leave with my first and used you tube to catch up on the stiches. I like patterns that have a rhythm to them.

This site has good free video tutorials http://www.mooglyblog.com/category/video-tutorials/
And I love Lucy's photo tutorials (especially the blankets since they use mainly basic stiches):

My mom tried teaching me both when I was a kid but I never kept up with it, when I first moved out in my own apt no roommates I taught myself to crochet using youtube, I debate trying to learn to knit since there is more versatility.

My mom showed me the basics and I learned the rest from books. I don't know the really fancy stitches but could probably learn if I had the time and the need (right now it's cheaper to just buy the kids ready clothes, good yarn is expensive and time is money too).

@mediagirl: totally. TV is basically always background for me these days anyway. My attention span is 0. That's why I like knitting, it makes me focus on something. Also, youtube and Ravelry are great resources - as others have said!

@psw27: oh, definitely. I used to scrapbook in front of the TV and mostly the TV was background to the scrapbooking. I figure knitting will be the same way. Concentrate on the knitting, have TV on in background.

I had an expert knitter teach me. I think I had 3 lessons of about 30 min each and I've practiced by working on some projects. I still don't really know how to start a project (she showed me but since I haven't done it more than once i think I would need to consult YouTube next time) and I only know 2 stitches.

I am not good enough yet to do it mindlessly though. I have to concentrate to make sure I'm doing the stitches correctly and pull the yarn evenly.
