@Truth Bombs: That was sort of my impression of Dave Ramsey as well, although I don't know much about him. I actually already have a very good friend who is a CFP and have a few other friends who work in various areas of finance. I will definitely use them as a resource as I become educated enough to ask intelligent questions. But I wanted to take a bit of initiative to learn some of the basics myself first :) Last night I learned what a stock and a bond were! haha (I mean... I SORT of knew... but now I actually understand that they are different and how! told you I was starting at BASICS here hah)

@looch: @Mrs. High Heels: I'll check those out, thank you!

@Mae: If you are looking to do estate planning for a wealthy clientele (which I'm assuming you are) you likely won't overlap much with Dave Ramsey so I wouldn't suggest that as a starting point. The majority of people following him aren't doing extensive estate planning like charitable trusts, etc that you would be likely to work with. I would try to do some looking around your area for someone who is a CFP (Certified Financial Planner) that may be willing to mentor you, or help point you towards a local resource. Honestly, a class would probably be the quickest/easiest way to learn. Getting some CFPs in your network would also be a great way to hopefully build up referral sources.

I have thought that The Bogleheads Guide to Investing is a great beginner book. It does follow the Boglehead philosophy though (low cost index funds beat actively managed funds).

I would look at the "principal topics" section here and if those items are what you're interested in then order a CFP (Certified Financial Planner) exam prep book / study guide ( or look for one in the test prep section at Barnes and noble ). The CFP exam covers taxes, investments, retirement planning etc and a study guide ( I'm thinking like an outline of all the topics) would give you a lot of good reference material. http://www.cfp.net/become-a-cfp-professional/cfp-certification-requirements/cfp-exam-requirement/about-cfp-exam#examcontent

Also agree with reading the WSJ when you can for current events. And sometimes financial planning magazine (available free online) has good current info too.

@Mae: Investing is a big part of what he talks about. It just doesn't get as much press because most people who find him are deeply in debt and have to go through the learning to budget and getting out of debt steps first. He has a pretty straightforward suggestion for how to invest for retirement and college. He also has a network of financial advisers that his company has vetted as being aligned with his values and having the "heart of a teacher", meaning their goal is to inform the consumer rather than sell them. We have worked with one here and have been very happy with the experience. If you wanted to sit down with a person face to face that might be a great place to start. You can find one by going to the ELP section of his website.

@Mrs. Lion: I know OF him but I always thought he was more about how to budget and pay off debt than about investing? I am mostly interested in learning about investing/retirement savings/asset management. Does he talk about that stuff?

If you want to learn about personal finance, Dave Ramsey's podcast has been really helpful for me. His books are also usually available at the public library and are a quick read and a great overview.

@Anagram: I'm actually less concerned about the real "estate planning/will writing" portion of the career change because there are legal seminars focused on that I am going to take. But I wanted to start getting a basic understanding of personal finance prior to starting those later this month because I think that it will help me understand what I'm learning at the legal seminars better (and because I plan to do some networking there and I don't want to look dumb... :) ) But I am very willing to read a book or two if anyone had suggestions for good starter books on the topic that are pretty universally accepted.

@mrbee: Yea I definitely plan to start trying to read finance sections when I can find the time! I guess one of the issues is that I'm currently a SAHM with a kid who only naps for like 1 maybe 1.5 hours all day... so I need the most "bang for my buck" trying to figure all this stuff out fast. I was hoping there was some good resource out there that summarizes all this stuff in one place.

@Mae: Reading the finance section of a newspaper is a great way to get started! I read the WSJ and Economist for year before it clicked for me... the FT is also a good read. Even if it's not always directly relevant, just being able to talk business news with other business people is always a great icebreaker, I think.

Maybe a good place to start re: personal finance would be reading up on various asset classes, and asset allocation strategies? Like the basics of what is a stock, a bond, and cash... and how to allocate investments into different categories, etc. Ties into wealth management, which I imagine is a big part of estate planning!

@mrbee: I'd like to know enough about both that I could read any major newspaper and know wtf they are talking about :) But I would be dealing mostly with personal finance (I'm a lawyer and thinking of changing focus to estate planning)

What advice would you give to someone (me) wanting to learn about it?

I learn fast and I'm pretty well educated, but I've always sort of remained willfully ignorant about finance. I'm not really sure why... I think because it never interested me before and then I married someone who works in finance and so he handles all of that stuff for us.

Now I'm thinking of making a career change where a good base of knowledge in finance will be important (I won't have to be an expert but I need to be able to hold a conversation and not look like a moron with people who are) and I'm really overwhelmed with where to start. My husband isn't a lot of help because he's always been interested in finance so he doesn't really know where one "starts" either.

I tried googling around for like... "introduction to personal finance" but I just wound up with a lot of courses and yahoo pages. Any advice is appreciated :)
