Our old backyard was wide open and super hot, so last summer we just used a beach umbrella in a cheapy base (from Home Depot or Walmart). I put the umbrella over the pool, so Sadie would have shade while playing. You just fill the base with water & it keeps the umbrella from falling over. Cheap & works well!

@Mrs. Sunshine: for a cheap solution even just a beach Umbrella stuck in the ground would give shade.

The dollar store or target also usual has those battery fan spray bottles. Those are great for cooling off

@Mrs. Sunshine: we put up a gazebo in our backyard and it gives good shade for part of the day and has held up pretty well. We get a lot of afternoon sun, so it's not great for late afternoon, but this one has an adjustable shade which would be awesome.

http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay?partNumber=15795-19407-S-J-110&langId=-1&storeId=10151&productId=1037945&catalogId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1

We are also planning on getting a swing for the tree out front because it gets better shade in the afternoon and we play out front sometimes.

We live in a really hot dry climate and there are no trees in our backyard so I understand! We have one of those sunshades like the picture above. It takes a bit to set up but it's so nice to have!

I saw something at costco the other day that was a giant shade tarp/sail type thing. I would look for a picture but I don't know what to call it.

@Mrs. Sunshine: why don't you have an arborist come out and tend to the tree? It would be safer all around and then you could better utilize your yard.

@T.H.O.U.: there are tree limbs that have literally broken off the tree but haven't fallen down yet...I will personally stand under the tree all day long but DH freaks out & limbs have randomly fallen before so I wouldn't dare put my LO in even a slight chance of that danger, especially because DH has expressly asked me not to. & no, we don't have a garage, or a carport. We are thinking of getting one because our cars get SO hot, we could kill two birds with one stone if we bit the bullet....

How dangerous is this tree? I've never really heard of a tree being unsafe to sit under.

I would get a pop up tent or gazebo type thing.

Do you have a garage that you could sit it but then do water activities in the driveway?

What are your outdoor play solutions for the summer? It's already warm enough here to be suffocating when you enter an unconditioned car & LO & I both are already developing a light layer of sweat when we have to walk across a parking lot. We have one shade tree in our yard but it is an unsafe tree (loose branches) & we can't play under it but outdoor play is a HUGE part of our day. We usually go out for 30 to 45 minutes about 3 times a day of we are home. What is a way to keep cool & still play in our yard? LO is 7 months
