@bluestriped bee: yep that's about right! Even with the air on, it's about 73-74, and he's wearing a diaper, thin shirt, and a sleep sack!
And I'm the same in needing a sheet too!

@bluestriped bee: we also have tough windows (1950s long, narrow, awning-style ones) so we can't use window AC units. When it gets really hot, we blast the portable unit in the bedroom wing (we can close a door between our 3 main floor bedrooms and the living/dining areas) from the time we get home to the time the sun goes down. It doesn't actually make the rooms cool but it makes them tolerable. Once the sun sets, it usually cools right down outside and we switch to fans. DD goes to bed in shorts/tee shirt pjs. When she was little, we had shortie one-pieces we used as pjs on hot nights. She tends to run warm so that has always been enough to keep her comfortable. Her room is at ground level so we don't leave her window open at night.

@BabyTsMom: After posting this question originally, I realized their room would get down to 74-72 in the AM. I think 74 degrees in the cool mornings with only a diaper is cold to me. 74 degrees in a diaper and a sleep sack, sounds a bit more comfortable.

When I sleep, I have at least a comforter and a sheet. Even if it is 85 degrees, I'll have at least a sheet on top of me.

@ShootingStar: So we have sliding windows (side to side) so no window AC in our place. We have a portable AC unit that we have in our bedroom and living room. But the other issue is the AC unit trips the circuit if both are on. So we have to decide which AC unit will be on throughout the day. So yeah, at this moment, the babies have a fan in the room with a timer on.

We are going to have another heat wave soon, and their room gets as warm as 86 degrees but in the morning cools down to 74. Right now, a sleepsack on top of short sleeved onesie or sleepsack on top of their diaper. We turn the fan on full blast before they go to bed to get the room cooled.

In the PNW here too! When DD was little I would diaper it. But usually the window slightly cracked some nights with light
jammies.

Is it out of the question to just buy a window unit? Around here a small one is less than $150. But then, I live in an area where most people have central air or window ac, even though summer isn't that long.

We have ac but even with it, I put LO in a very thin gauzy top, diaper, and sleep sack. So you think 80 is too cold for a summer morning? I don't think I could sleep if it was 80! My LO also tends to run really hot. He sweats a lot. I keep the ac at about 72 during the summer.

Depends how hot. Last summer she was typically in a diaper and a swaddle with multiple fans blowing and window open. It was never too cold by morning. Lately she has been in very thin pajamas with window closed and no fans, but last night the temp leaped up and she was roasting, so we took off the pajamas and put her down in just a diaper with three fans blowing and window open. Later we opened her nursery door as well, when we realized it was warmer inside her room than it was outside.

If we keep getting summers like the last few have been, I think everyone is going to buy portable AC and window AC units sooner or later. We may cave this year.

With LO1 we did a summer sleepsack or just a short sleeved PJ and sometimes when insanely hot just a onesie. LO2 still sleeps in Zippydee Zip and wears just a diaper in there when it's hot. I usually do open their windows since it takes a long time to cool the room down. I don't like to have a fan in there for the whole night. (I don't like working them unsupervised).

I'm in the PNW as well. If it's a hot night, I put her in cotton pjs with no socks, leave the window open two or three inches for a breeze, and put an a and a swaddle over her before I go to bed. If it's a super hot night, I put her in just a diaper, leave the window wide open, mostly close the window and put a swaddle blanket on her before I go to bed.

I check the overnight temperatures. If it's already 86 in the evening chances are it won't get cool enough overnight to be an issue. As soon as it cools down outside where the temp is lower than inside. We open all the windows and turn all the fAns on. It also helps to use a fan to pull all the out air out in the morning when the temp is the lowest. Then before it gets too hot (8-9am) we close all the windows, blinds and shades to keep the heat out as much as possible.

To be honest when the upstairs is more than 76 my girls can't not fall asleep. It was 77 the other night and 10pm. Both girls were still crying and awake. It finally was cool enough outside that I turned the air on and opened all the windows because it was cooling the upstairs down quicker than the air. I left the nursery door open and had DD1 sleep in our room because it was cooler than her room.

Our last house did not have ac and for the most part it was fine, we just used fans and put LO in a onsie and sleep sack when he was a baby and it was hot. But his first summer we had a couple ridiculous heat waves where it was like 90 inside and we couldn't get it to cool down for nap time. We ended up just getting a window unit for his room and it made a huge difference. He wasn't sleeping through the night so it wasn't a big deal to turn it off or switch it to the fan mode in the MOTN but I think if you get one with a thermostat that might be your best bet. If you don't want to buy one, I'd probably do a onsie and have the fans going until it cools down.

Our house usually goes from low 80s to mid 70s. They usually go to bed sans jammies lately and fall asleep with no blanket or covers. Usually at some point I'll hear them say I'm cold and pull up a blanket or I'll go find it for them since they end up kicking them off their bed initially. We do have fans in their room though. So while the breeze doesn't make them cold initially I guess as the temp drops it does.

We live in central California ( 110 degree temps aren't out of the ordinary,) and our 1949 rental only has a wall a/c in two other rooms so he goes to sleep in just a onesie with two fans pointed at him. It's not ideal and I can't wait to buy a house with central heat and air.

Following because I am always wondering if LO is too hot or cold!

We have AC and keep our house at 77/78 in the evening. I've always heard the rule of thumb to dress children in as many layers you're in. DH & I sleep in our underwear under just a sheet, so as a parallel, LO sleeps in thin cotton long-sleeved footed pjs but no sleep sack. He doesn't seem hot or cold. You could check on them 1-2x during the night, for one or two nights, to see if they got hot or cold, and then go from there.

If it was in the 80s I'd probably do just a diaper.

We're in the Seattle area too and as you know the last few summers have been brutal!

You can get a fan with a timer on it so it's set to turn off after 4-6 hours. She slept in a short sleeve onesie and lightweight cotton sleepsack.

The first summer with LO it wasn't so bad so we just used a fan but we did end up buying a portable AC unit and had it in our master bedroom and had LO sleep in a pack and play in our room on the super hot days. She was around 8 months at the time and her bedtime was super early (like 5:30) so it was still pretty hot at bedtime.

The next summer was much worse and so hot so we got a portable unit for her room and we've used it every summer (this will be the 4th summer)

Just a diaper and a sleep sack?

Last night, we had a fan on in their room. The temp (from the monitor) said 86 degrees. At that point, it was way too hot for anything but a diaper.

I don't like opening a window because it could get very cool by the morning. I think it would be cold in the morning like too cold. I don't think a sleep sack would help.

It was 80 degrees this morning and I felt bad that they were cooler than how I would sleep. I would have at least a sheet to cover me up.

If you don't have AC in your house and it gets warm, what do you do?

Babies are sleeping through the night (8+ hours). Do I set my alarm at 12am and 4am to check on them and wake them to put them in a sleep sack?

Or do you turn on the fan really high and put them in the sleep sack.

I know in the winter their room is 68-70 degrees (as recommended) but they are in PJs and a sleep sack. So are they already used to sleeping in 80 degrees because of all the clothes and sleep sack they wear?

Is that what you do?

I guess, if you live in the PNW, you'll probably have this issue since it's not common to have AC in this area.
