@BananaPancakes: LOL I thought I was the only one who wasn't getting used to it.

When I lived in Atlanta, it could be unbearable but I didn't mind. We just stayed indoors and there are SO many indoor activities up there.

Now that I live in Central Florida, I think everyone complains all summer. We have all been praying for fall this entire month. It's just humid. Even at 7am, I come back in from a morning walk drenched. Luckily, most mom things are in the morning. It's just hot lol my A/C is always on 73 (or lower). I live on the second floor so it's necessary.

Fwiw, I had WAY more bugs when I lived in ATL than I do here in Texas! Maybe my exterminator just gets more practice here :silly:

@ldh112: @Mamasig: oh yeah. All the bugs. Cockroaches and water bugs (whatever you want to call them) are disgusting and are in any old building. Some new buildings, too. We just killed one that was as long as my pointer finger in my office yesterday. There are more poisonous snakes and spiders here, too. But we have been lucky in that regard. Haven't seen too many.

Coming from the Midwest, I will say that you will be sorely disappointed in the display of fall color here in Texas. Some years we have color, but it doesn't even come remotely close to the Midwest.

The roaches are like nothing I've ever seen before. We live in a home and very rarely see them. I found them to be more common in apartments. I think in the eight years in my house, I've seen maybe 4 total in the house. And we do not use a pest control service. I will more frequently find them dead in my garage, but that still is maybe 2/year (at the most).

I've lived in NYC, Atlanta and Austin. I think Atlanta would be a good compromise for you! All 4 seasons including snow, not as hot in the summer, really pretty and hilly and family-friendly. It sounds like if it's just for grad school, it would only be a few years? I'd do it especially if it was just a short adventure and you could return to your frigid happy place when it's over. :-)

@hilsy85: I don't think you are crazy. This was one of my major concerns about moving here (other than leaving my family and friends of course). I knew I would SAH and I was afraid going places and doing things with LO would be miserable because of the heat. It has been totally fine! But then again I am from Nashville so it is not as huge of an adjustment. I have met a lot of transplants from the north and the west coast though and they all seem to think Austin is awesome, so it can't be that bad.

We haven't seen any roaches but we had an ant problem right when we moved in. Apparently it is super common around here. Plus scorpions. So, yeah.... Not exactly an upside! In Nashville we never had bug problems other than mosquitos outside.

@Mrs.KMM: I'm with you that I am enjoying summer despite the heat a lot more than I thought I would! I'll always take the sun shining on a hot day over a grey cold winter day. Part of it, I think, is that I am staying home with LO now so we are doing different things every day and having a lot of fun together. I feel a lot more motivated to get out with her when the sun is shining! And despite the heat there's a lot to do indoors or outdoors around here.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: Haha! Sorry that we are a few of those 200 per day! :silly: I agree that it seems like everything is more expensive than it should be here. The rental market is crazy. But if you are coming from NYC it will still seem really affordable. So glad to hear the leaves DO change, by the way!

@hilsy85: oh - and if you wanted to do any kind of research on areas near Georgia Tech, both Midtown or Virginia Highlands would probably fit what you're looking for.

Midtown is going to be mostly condo/apartment living while Virginia Highlands has lots of super cute single-family homes in an older, well established neighborhood. Both areas are very walkable with shops and restaurants and such. And both have very easy (walking) access to Piedmont Park, which is often referred to as the Central Park of the South. It is awesome!

ETA: both locations will also give you easy walking access to the Atlanta Beltline Eastside trail.

UT has an amazing engineering program. I believe it was just announced that it's #5 in the world. My husband is a software engineer and graduated from UT.

Austin is growing SO FAST and it's getting expensive fast, at least to us that have lived here for so long. We had to move out of city limits because we got priced out.

As far as bugs go, we don't pay for any pest control and we hardly see any, aside from wasps and fire ants outside, but those are easily taken care of. I have a couple friends in more of a "country" setting and they do see scorpions and spiders much more than we do in the 'burbs.

The leaves do change color, mostly gold and red. the spring is AMAZING though. Gorgeous bluebonnets and other wildflowers, trees flowering everywhere. Tradition is to go take pictures of your kid/dog/family in the field of bluebonnets. The weather here is awesome, aside from July/August and there are so many people outside hiking/running/kayaking/boating/etc. There's a group you can join to go hiking with your baby. AND everyone is so friendly here.

But seriously, there are so many people moving to Austin right now. I think like 200 a DAY. It reminds me of this shirt:

I think you just adjust to it. My parents retired to Savannah and have adjusted quite well. I would love to live in a place with little snow. We don't get too much here but we have all 4 seasons which is nice. I can't imagine living up north or in Canada. Too cold for me!!!

@BananaPancakes: it's not the south specifically--he is interested in grad school programs in engineering, and a lot of the top ones are in the south (Georgia Institute of Tech, UT, I think one is in Florida...).

@lawbee11: yeah from what I've heard of Dallas, Houston, and Austin, Austin would definitely be the best option of the 3 for us (not anything against the other places!). We've been to Austin before and liked it, but OMG it was so hot, and it was only May!

This whole thread probably seems crazy to you all who live in the south, but it is seriously mind boggling for me to imagine living somewhere with SUCH a different climate! And weather is so important to me--when I studied abroad in Denmark, I think I wrote about the weather in my journal every single day, lol. So I appreciate all the helpful comments and that no one is calling me looney :)

@hilsy85: Dallas might be a nice compromise. It's further north so they do get some snow there (not anything like you're used to, but they get a small amount!). Though I'd much rather live in Austin than Dallas.

@regberadaisy: There are race issues all over this country, as is clearly evident by watching the news. I think making a generalization about racism in an entire part of the country is a big leap on a thread asking about the weather.

@hilsy85: I live in TN and have never seen a roach here. Bugs aren't any worse than they are in the North.
