I was raised in the south but live in the NYC area...so if anyone without known southern roots says "Ma'am" to me, it is 50/50 whether they are being polite or actually rude/mocking.

I "ma'am" my daughters as in "No Ma'am, go back in and wash your hands, please."
I also have told them at times the only acceptable answers being told to do something are "Yes, Ma'am" and "oK, Mommy". :silly:
I often have my kids call friends' moms "Miss First name" because last names can be tricky (Joey Smith's mom often isn't "Mrs. Smith")....but I do ask first since some people think the "Miss" thing is weird for various reasons.

I Ma'am my daughter lol
I was taught Ma'am as a respect thing not an age thing!
I truly would only say miss to a girl maybe under 20?!

@Veggie: Oh, I'm not offended! Like I said, I know it implies respect...but also age, ha! No, being called Miss would be far weirder to me.

Hmm, so I live in NY and I remember going to Red Lobster with my grandparents, maybe I was 10, and the waiter called me ma'am. My grandma made such a big deal out of it, in a good way! I think I'm one of the only women who actually enjoy being called ma'am and I don't understand why some people get so offended. What would you rather be called? Miss?

@MamaG: I also call my girls ma'am (big one is ma'am and LO is baby ma'am haha). I first started getting it from strangers when I was doing adult errands solo- the grocery clerk, the bank teller etc. would all call me that as young as 18/19! I am always called ma'am now that I have kiddos (and I'm only 29!)

If you live in the south, when did you first start getting called ma'am? It still throws a shock to my system a little bit every time it happens, even though I acknowledge that it is meant to be respectful!

Long story short, I was introduced to a new employee at work who promptly called me ma'am. Geesh, I'm only thirty! :silly:
