The vet cremated I assume. My dog got off his leash and was hit by a car. I was a mess so my parents handled it all.

Our first dog we cremated him. I wanted to cremate our 2nd dog but it was too expensive ($500) so we posted for a mass cremation and we did not get her ashes back.

Thanks everyone.

I also wonder what would be easier for my kids - they are 4 and 6 right now. Would they want to bury her - would they understand if I left her at the vet (cremated).

@Torchwood: I thought about taking her to my mom's house - she will be there until she dies - she has a really nice memorial garden set up for her mom and she said we could put piper there when the time comes. But she lives 3 hrs away.....

@Mamasig: my blue heeler was hit by a car in front of our last house! Two years ago and up until recently I would cry af least once every week. They are such amazing beautiful smart dogs.

We had our dog cremated and took her ashes. We buried the ashes beneath a rose bush and placed a memorial plaque under the bush with our dog's name on it. Seeing that rose bush flourish and bloom always brings a smile to my face.

@Mamasig: that is so awful :(

We haven't been there yet, but we will cremate and spread her ashes at the cottage. I don't even like thinking about it but it will be helpful to have a plan in place when the time comes, hopefully years from now.

I had my dog cremated and they gave me her ashes in a little box. She's somewhere in my house but after several moves do not remember where.

Our blue heeler was hit by a truck. DH searched for him until he found him. He cleaned him up and buried him in our back yard. We live on an acre and chose the back corner so he'd be there but not where the boys play. Ugh - I've never seen my husband so upset.

My mom had both her dog and her cat buried on her parent's property. They will never move, so it made sense. I wouldn't want to bury my pet somewhere that I would wind up leaving eventually. I think we'll cremate and then do something nice with the ashes. I've looked at some cool things to do with R's, like have jewelry made, so I might look into something similar for our pups. Or we might spread them somewhere meaningful.

We had our girl cremated and we have her ashes along with a paw print.

It was so sad for me to go back to the place where we had her put to sleep and I do not find comfort in having her ashes. It was important to my husband, however, so we got it done. It's also more expensive to have your dog cremated all by herself, but we weren't thinking about what made my financial sense at that moment.

I'm sorry you're having to start thinking about this. Old dogs are so sweet. I cry whenever I hear about dogs passing--I don't even have to personally know the dog!

The vet cremated her and gave us a concrete (or plaster? something rock-like) disk with his paw print in it. We buried her ashes in the flower bed and put the disk with the paw print over it.

We let the vet cremate our dog and we did not take the remains with us. I had previously thought of spreading his ashes in a park that he loved visiting but when the time came, we had a lot going on with LO being 3 weeks old and other family being sick so we did not move forward with that idea. The vet offered a paw print but we declined - we have so many photos and memories we decided we did not need anything additional.

We let the vet take care of it because we rent and do not have a place to bury, but we also didn't feel comfortable with holding onto the cremated remains. We had a paw imprint made of his paw prior to losing him and treasure that as a memory of him.

.... what did you do with their body? Bury in backyard? Bury at pet cemetery? Cremate?

Just came across this and was pondering ordering one (Dog is 14) just to have on hand when the time comes. I guess I figured we would bury her in the backyard but the thought of putting her in the ground doesn't rest well with me - I like the idea of having a coffin type box for her

https://www.pawpods.com/

Or maybe we will cremate her?

I feel like I need to be prepared because I will be a wreck once it actually happens!
