Hi all, thank you for all the congratulations and advice for us. I have to admit I was a little panicky and feeling like I was failing this morning, but I'm feeling much better now. After cluster feeding all night, Alice has been something of an angel. Blake is doing really well with his feedings too and his latch is doing great. Still pumping and hoping someday I'll see some output. My parents have been here at the hospital and cuddled the babies while DH and I napped, which was awesome. I even took my first shower. Also, Blake has maintained his temp enough today that he's in an open air bassinet instead of his isolette. I feel like I'm getting through one of our first of many rough spots and it feels great.

@Trailmix: Blake was 4 lb 15 oz and Alice was 5 lb 15 oz at 38 w 2 d. We were shocked they came out as little as they did. My OB wonders if they stopped growing at the end there? Luckily today the pediatrician did not seem as concerned about the weight loss, so I'm hoping they aren't losing as m cub as before! Of course I was in the shower when the ped came by.

@sunshineandsushi: thanks for the welcome to the twins club! It is something else, but we are so obsessed with these little creatures we made. I know we're in the thick of it now but one day we will look back and miss how tiny they are!

@oliviaoblivia: @cascademom: I actually WANT to supplement with formula! I want BF to work, but I just really want to see my babies with full tummies and start putting on weight. I feel like the hospital staff are pushing BF down our throats? Luckily their weight loss seems to have slowed down and we hopefully won't have to face supplementation decisions before we go home. I hope by then my milk will just come in and it will be a moot point. But I don't think of FF as a failure - I feel like more of a failure that I can't seem to communicate well enough to the staff for them to understand that I just want happy full babies. I think this is at least a little bit PP hormones though!

Congratulations! I just wanted to tell you to not feel bad about supplementing if you need to. I had colostrum but my milk didn't come in for a week. On day 4 he was so hungry he was screaming whenever he was awake and he started to show signs of dehydration. We supplemented with formula after BFing, and I supplemented a lot during the first growth spurts because we had thrush and it was too painful to nurse constantly for hours. But we've been EBF for months now :). I know it's different with twins, but don't feel like your ability to breastfeed is doomed because you need to supplement :).

I lost a fairly large amount of blood, and my milk was in on day three - had her early Friday morning, and by Sunday night it was in. Congratulations on your healthy little babies! Hope recovery goes smoothly for you.

Congrats!!! I had an uncomplicated c-section and my milk was in in 2.5 days. DD had a 12% weight loss, we ended up supplementing just 3oz of formula using an SNS and my milk arrived shortly after. Formula is not the devil. We were able to be EBF until past a year.

Congrats! I don't think that I lost a lot of blood during labor and delivery. My milk didn't come in until day 5. Pumping encouraged it to start. I remember calling my parents crying when my milk came in after those tense days.

@twodoghouse: Congratulations!!!! I did not lose a ton of blood, but my milk started coming in on day 2 and by day 3 I was completely engorged. My nurse said that the frenzied feeding was a sign that my milk would be coming in soon, so I hope the same goes for you!

I had a major hemmorhage and a transfusion the day after DD was born. My milk came in at day 5. Yes, she lost a lot of weight during that time. Yes, it was really hard. But I asked my ped to believe in my body and to let me keep trying - I feel like I offered DD to nurse around the clock from days 3-5. But my milk did come in and she gained back all the weight very quickly. We BF until 14 months (never supplemented).

CONGRATS! I lost a lot of blood during my c-section. I didn't need a transfusion, but I remember having to spend longer during recovery because of the hemorrhaging and having to pass a lot of clots. My milk came in day 5 (twins were born on 2 a.m. on Tuesday, milk came in Saturday afternoon).

When I first started pumping, I didn't get much but it grew over time.

GL and welcome to the twin mama club! It's absolutely amazing.

@twodoghouse: it's FINE to supplement if you're worried and it's fine to just keep nursing them, although it is harder when you have two to care for! We would have them nurse, then give them an oz or two of formula (and mine were big babies with minimal jaundice issues so I'm sure if they were smaller or fighting jaundice, we would've done anything to get them full and happy!).
How much did they weigh, anyways??
Just a heads up, you know this but the next few weeks will be very, very intense. It gets better tho, I promise!

@twodoghouse: Congrats!!!

I didn't hemorrhage or anything like that but I did have to get a shot in my thigh after she was born because I was losing blood. My milk came in the day we went home from the hospital (day 2). I did a ton of skin to skin at the hospital, so I highly recommend that. I didn't sleep much, but to me it was worth it. I really think it made a big difference. Good luck!!

@Trailmix: Thank you it is so great to hear your experience! @Arden: @Trailmix: I think they are getting some colostrum from me now, but they are losing too much % of body weight which is why we're looking at supplementation. Blake (smaller twin) is also borderline jaundice. I'm just struggling a lot with seeing then panic at the breast over and over again because they have empty tummies and aren't getting much satisfaction from just sucking all night long.

Congratulations!!!!!

I lost a TON of blood, and my milk came in on day 4, very plentifully. I'm guessing yours will be in within the next day or so. Is it an option to give them donor milk for a day or two?

Also do keep in mind that at this point their stomachs are like the size of marbles, so even if you only get a couple cc's, that's probably enough for them! They don't need near as much as you'd imagine during those first few days.

Yaaaay, congrats on your twins!!
I lost so much blood during my c-section that I passed out on the table!! I had to have a transfusion and it took several weeks before I had any energy again.
It wasn't until the morning of Day 5 (babies were born at 11:00 pm Sat night and milk came in Thurs morning). We had to straight supplement for the first 36 hours they were born bc I had to have a magnesium sulfate IV due to pre-e.
Now, all that being said, I was able to go on to EBF my twins and we'll be hitting the one-year mark in a few weeks so no matter what happens, don't lose hope! I wasn't able to drop the formula until the babies were about 8 weeks old.
Here's what I did: I rented a Medela Symphony (hospital grade) pump and pumped after the first 3 feeds of the day, per my LCs recommendation. So this was usually at 6am, 9am and 12pm, approximately. Don't be discouraged if you don't get much milk at first, your body's supply takes a few days to catch up to increased demand. I also went on a daily regimen of oatmeal, wheat beer, fenugreek, blessed thistle and mothers milk tea plus drank a TON of water.
At this stage, they are so small that only a few ccs will satisfy them! If you're getting some colostrum, that's good and your milk will come in very soon! We also used an SNS system with formula to help the babies learn to nurse and nipple shields.
You can totally do this, just keep pumping and nursing as much as you can stand it!!
