I lost 6 lbs in the first trimester, started gaining it back at 14 weeks, reached prepregnancy weight at 23 weeks and only gained 12 lbs (net) overall. Baby girl was 8 lb 6 oz and perfectly healthy. It's weird. My dr said over and over (I asked often), that the lack of weight gain was fine, but yet still insisted on weighing me every visit. Why weigh women at all if the number doesn't matter?

I hadn't gained until my last appointment at 24 weeks. The same thing happened with my last pregnancy. It's fine as long as your doc isn't worried.

I didn't gain until around 16-18 weeks and at 23 weeks I've only gained 3 kg (6.6 lbs). My midwife was unconcerned and still isn't concerned about my weight and gain but I was overweight to start with.

I didn't gain weight until 22 weeks...and I gained 8 lbs in 1 month :) I always gained weights in spurts and would go weeks/months without. My doctor laughed and told me to eat a scoop of peanut butter at night to get my weight up. I lost weight in my 1st due to MS.

Everyone is so different with how they gain, and I also think a lot of it depends on your body type. I lost a pound in my first tri both times but then piled the weight on in my second tri. I didn't really gain much in my third tri with my first (currently 26 weeks with my second) and ended up gaining 32 lbs total. Right now I'm up 21 lbs at the 26 week mark so I appear to be bang on track with a repeat of last time, but I'm also quite thin naturally and I think that has something to do with it. I know our bodies need to build up fat stores whilst pregnant to support breastfeeding etc, so I'm pretty sure mine does that during the second tri and then just chills for the remainder of pregnancy.

Bottom line though is that the weight gain charts are to be taken with a grain of salt as everyone is so different. You will know better than anyone if you're eating an appropriate quantity and making healthy food choices. As long as you're doing that, I wouldn't worry about it.

it's really such a relief to hear that so many of you didn't gain until later on! I'm not super worried since I've been seeing my doctor regularly and she hasn't said anything, but everything I read online or in books is so much about controlling weight gain that I was feeling really like a freak for losing instead of gaining. I was a little overweight before so I don't think the loss is a big deal in the grander scheme of things, and I do take a prenatal and try to eat healthily (though, I do let myself eat ice cream more now since I haven't been gaining ;) ), it's just I think my portions are smaller than before since I get sick if I overeat.

I'm curious about this too... I didn't even have real nausea and stopped my intense workouts in the first tri and I still lost 1lb at my 13 week appointment. It's not much of a loss, but I have been EATING. So I'm ok with not gaining too much weight but I do want my baby to grow! We'll see what happens in the coming weeks!? We've still got time to gain, @nana87! AND the holidays are coming! ;)

My sister in law is a midwife, not MY midwife though. But she was saying that no matter what size you are to start out with, she likes to see weight gain on her mommas. She cited a research article about how not gaining anything could be less than great for the baby. But I would just go by what your physician thinks is good for unique, you!

I lost weight for the whole first half of my pregnancy. At one point I was down close to 20 pounds, though that didn't last long. I hovered at -15 for quite a while, then -10. Now at 36 weeks, I'm hovering between -5 and -10.

ETA: Baby was last measured at 59th percentile, so nothing to worry about there. I've had GD since 10 weeks, and a huge lack of appetite for a long time. I think the GD diet really kept my gaining in check.

I didn't start gaining weight until after 20 weeks, and didn't surpass my pre-pregnancy weight until the third trimester. I was carrying very small, but my Dr didn't seem worried. My baby was born healthy, over 8 lbs, so try not to worry about weight gain if you otherwise feel healthy!

I lost close to 15 lbs in the first trimester, and I didn't hit pre-pregnancy weight until well into the third trimester. When I went into labor I was only 4 lbs above that. But E was always right on track and was close to 9 lbs at birth. My midwife told me that we were a textbook case of a baby taking exactly what they need from their mother.

I'm pregnant with #2. I'm 22 weeks and I've gained 2 lbs (but I clearly look pregnant and baby is measuring great). Last pregnancy I lost 12 lbs in my first trimester (horrible morning sickness) and didn't start to gain until around 18 weeks.

My doctor isn't concerned this time and wasn't concerned last time. Women gain at different rates through their pregnancy.

As long as you are eating healthy (fruits, veggies, lean protein, lots of water, etc), don't worry.
