Thanks so much for all your insight! Just back from my appointment. So standard practice at my office is that they schedule a NST and u/s to check fluid at 41 weeks (which is a sunday so it got scheduled for 41+1 for me). I'll also have a cervical check for the first time at 40 weeks (although I could've had them at any appointment previous but its just my preference and I prefer not).

I went to 42 weeks. There was a regular appointment at 40 weeks, an ultrasound at 41 weeks (check size, movement, fluid, placenta etc), a non-stress test at 41 + 2 weeks, another ultrasound at 41+ 5 weeks and went into labour at 41+ 6 weeks. FWIW, there were never any problems, even though she was late.

I ended up going into labor exactly on my due date, but had that not happened they would have done a membrane sweep, no tests were ever discussed.

My midwives were going to order some tests at 41 weeks, just to check on amniotic fluid, etc. I ended up having an NST at 40 weeks though, because I went to the hospital with wicked swelling. Baby came at 41 weeks exactly, so we didn't get to the ordered tests.

My midwife practice wouldn't have done many interventions before 42 weeks other than an ultrasound. The new "wisdom" is that normal gestation is anywhere between 37-42 weeks (ie there's nothing magical about the 40 week mark), so I don't think they were going to get concerned before 41+.

My midwife group's standard practice is an ultrasound at 41 weeks to check on the baby and fluid levels. They are pretty hands-off as you mentioned yours is as well. My previous MW group was a bit more hands-on and I think started doing NSTs at 40 weeks and probably and ultrasound too.

I ended up going at 39+6, but the plan was a regular midwife appt at 40 weeks and then an ultrasound at 41 weeks. However I didn't want to go past 41 weeks so told them I didn't want the US and just wanted to be induced. Luckily it didn't come to that. Good luck!!

I had my LO at 41+2 and after 39w was asked to come in every 3 days for a NST. On the first visit they also checked baby size, fluid levels and placenta via ultrasound. I then went to labor naturally.

I delivered at 41 weeks and I recall going for an NST on my due date as well as 2-3 times after. Basically, every other day. I also had an ultrasound at some point because I remember them telling me they thought that LO was going to be 8 lbs and I was freakig out... She was actually 6 lbs 11oz :-)

In NZ it's standard practice to do a post-dates assessment at ten days overdue providing there are no concerns or medical indications that things aren't well. Most midwives will see overdue patients every 2-3 days after forty weeks.

Sounds like *most* people had a NST and u/s to check fluid if they went much past 40. Good to know! I have no idea what the norm is at my practice because I was hoping it wouldn't come up (and it still might not!). But I think at 39 weeks I'd sort of like to know what the plan is if I go past my due date. I do expect everything should be fine because I've had such a normal/uneventful pregnancy. But since I have known people whose babies had actual problems after 40 weeks it's hard not to worry a little and just want to check in on LO moreso than my normal "baby moving okay?"/doppler appointments. :)

I had a textbook pregnancy (no problems, that is) and went to 40w5d before having DS. We didn't have any tests done to check on him. My midwife would have done a cervical check and a membrane sweep at 41 weeks had I made that far -- up until that point I hadn't been checked.

I see a Homebirth midwife who is very much against unnesseccary actions, but she did say that if I go past 40 weeks she'd prefer me to have an ultrasound to check things out if I would be willing. She isn't super quick to induce (she actually recently had a mom go 43w5d) but she does want to continually monitor to be sure things are safe for mama and baby.

At 40+6 with #1 I had a biophysical ultrasound! Just to ensure everything was ok. At that point I was probably transitioning from early to active labour, I can't say laying for that u/s through contractions was the most fun I've ever had.

So I'm 39w1d and hoping for a natural med-free birth. I am not horribly uncomfortable or anxious and I am completely happy to go to 42 to give baby a chance to come out on her own.

However I'm wondering if I should have some sort of tests done after 40 weeks just to make sure baby is okay? I go to a midwife practice that is very hands off (which I generally like) and I don't know what their policies or procedures are. I plan to ask tomorrow at my 39 week appointment. I don't want them to think I'm angling for an induction because I am definitely not. I just know a few people whose babies have had legit problems after 40 weeks (low fluid, placental issues, baby laying on its cord which was caught during a NST) and I want to make sure it is safe to wait.

I guess I just wanted to see what was "normal" for people who have made it to 40 weeks with no health problems (I haven't had any high bp, swelling, and baby measures right on track when they measure my stomach).
