Yes, but I feel like it is inevitable. I want them to explore the world and experience living in another country as well.

@Aimed: i feel the same way as you. I really hope we instil a desire to travel and explore the world and for our children to not be afraid to venture off on their own (while still calling home to check in every few days though! ). Both my husband and I are the only ones in our families (he has 3 brothers and I have 2 sisters) who have moved further than an hour away from our hometown. We currently live across the country from our families.

@sunny: Yeah, that's a complicating factor in my Grand Life Plan, too. :) Maybe they'll choose inexpensive places to live and my husband and I can split our time between them? Or maybe they'll be coastal dwellers and we can dock a boat nearby! We may have to play it by ear...

I don't really worry because I plan to follow them. ;) My thought is that this may be one of the bonuses of being "older" parents. In all likelihood, when our child(ren) are having kids, we'll be old enough to basically retire and move. I'd move to the ends of the earth to hang out with my grandchildren!

I've thought about it and would be really sad if LOs decide to move away. My parents moved away for my dad's job and it was sad to grow up without grandparents and cousins. We would only see them once a year and it was rough, pre-skype and all that. We are currently far from our parents but hope to move near one set or the other down the line once we are more settled.

My parents moved away from their families. It's only an 8 hour distance, so not out of country or even out of state but a decent drive. When my brother and I graduated college we both got our first jobs and settled in the area my parents are from. So now it's just my parents 8 hours away. At least they only have one place to visit everyone.

Because my LO is an EU citizen as well as a US citizen, I will encourage him to discover the EU. I have even thought about him going to college there (and not just because it would save us a bajillion dollars!).
Travel and moving abroad was such an exciting and independent experience for me and I would want him to experience that. TBH, if he just settled locally without exploring on his own a bit first, I would be disappointed, life is short.

My parents both moved far from home for college and never moved back (from Texas to colleges on the east coast, and then to the midwest for job opportunities), and they always encouraged me to do the same--I didn't even apply to in-state schools for college! They thought it was really important to move away to establish independence. I'm still very close to my parents even though I haven't lived in the same place as them in over a decade (well, now they're moving to where I am, not bc of me but for work!) so it doesn't really scare me that lo might do the same thing. I will definitely encourage her to follow her passions, and won't be surprised if she moves away.

@sandy: I'm definitely encouraging a west coast school :-) My dream school for her is Stanford.

Maybe if she moves I will follow her! Haha!

Similar to @looch: my family have all moved away from their birthplace. I have a great-great grandfather from Spain, another from England that moved to the Philippines. Then my great-grandparents moving from his island home to be more inland, my grandparents did the same and then eventually immigrated to the States. Now I'm in Scandinavia, while my family are all in California.

I never even thought about my DD leaving me. Hopefully in a few years they invent a more convenient way of travel.

I think about this sometimes and it makes me sad too! I stayed close by but I worry she'll go off to school somewhere and settle down there. So either I'll try and encourage a west coast school or a school where a high percentage of the students don't stick around the area ;)

My parents moved across the world from their families when they got married. I saw my grandparents once a year but we were still close. And now that we have a LO on the way we bought a house 20 min from my parents. I think my mom assumed as we were growing up that we might follow in their footsteps and live far away, but she is obviously thrilled that we will be living close! :)

I don't have any children yet, but as someone who is a bit of a traveling gypsy, I will strongly encourage them to move far away and travel as much as they can. I truly broke out of my shell when I moved away from home. I will want them to experience as much of the world as they can.

The best way I can put it is like this...wanderlust is genetic in my family. My paternal great grandfather, paternal grandfather, both parents and most recently, my husband and I have all moved away from their motherland at some point, so I expect my son will do it as well.

My mother put it beautifully when she said she never understood what she put her mother through when she moved to the US until I was on my way to Switzerland. The world is much smaller these days, my parents used to have to call each other once a week and there was no such thing as skype.

If you moved far away from your parents (e.g. to another country, across the country, etc.) do you worry that your little ones will do the same?

I moved from Toronto to Seattle and we are pretty settled here. I don't think we are moving back to Canada anytime soon. My DH's family lives in Europe and we aren't moving there either. We see our parents about once every year or two. I forgot to mention that all of our parents moved away from our Grandparents too. My parents immigrated to Canada from Asia and only saw their parents a total of 3-4 times after they turned 25.

Sometimes I worry that my LO will follow in our footsteps and move away from us! I would miss her so much!
