Before, I wanted him to have time to adjust to it before baby arrived, and I didn't want to deal with transitioning him to a bed while dealing with the sleep exhaustion newborns tend to bring. I bought him a twin bed and got a mesh rail for the side of it. It went great and was definitely the best decision for our family/LO. By the time little brother was born and started using the crib he didn't seem to think of it as his bed anymore at all.

Not even gonna bother. E just gets up off the floor bed and opens the door and walks around. I'm going to use a co sleeper this summer for LO2 and reevaluate. Buying another bed for $100 isn't a big deal. Maybe by then E will understand the floor bed better

We switched 6 months before my due date so that lo1 wouldn't associate it with being his bed anymore. He was 18 months. The nursery is on the other side of the wall from our room, so baby will be going directly into the crib in there, so we wanted lots of time.

We did it way ahead of time. Not sure why, but I think it was because we wanted to potty train and move her to a different room (and floor) so we gave each transition its own space ahead of DD2's arrival.

@.twist.: she still rolled quite a bit, but we put her in a low bed (mattress on a box spring on the floor) with bed rails on the open sides. We were very careful to lower a bed rail every time we got her up and never let her see us (or her) go over the rail. So, she (presumably) thinks that the rail HAS to be down for her to get out of bed. She has never fallen out. She did get more still after we gave her a toddler pillow at 18 months or so. I honestly think earlier was better for our family.

We will transition LO1 a few months before LO2 arrives. I planned to have LO1 sleep in our room in a cosleeper sidecar but she refused to sleep within 20 feet of me. I plan to have LO2 all set up with her own space before she arrives in case she's the same way. I think LO1 will be in a floor bed with a crib or twin mattress.

We were going to transition a couple of months before LO2 gets here, so she would have been 26 or 27 months. But we ended up transitioning her when her bedroom set went on sale at PB for Black Friday weekend haha. That decided it for us. I think it got delivered a week after her 2nd bday and she has been a total rockstar with it. And it's a queen!

@T.H.O.U.: Definitely, we bought another crib for LO 2 since we didn't want to move LO 1 into a bed at 16 months.

She went to a twin bed around 22 months so we could use the crib for #2.

But cribs are also pretty cheap these days. We love our basic Graco crib. So if the transition is too tough, it may be worth it to just grab a $150 crib.

We transitioned L from crib to floor (Queen) bed at 14-15ish months. She did it perfectly! She only rolled off the bed maybe 3 times before she learned to avoid the edge. We gave her 4 months before baby came.

@cyan: Did your LO roll around a lot? My LO is 18 months and I would really like to put the rail up for the toddler bed, but he moves around so much in his sleep it makes me nervous. I also don't know how to explain to him what's happening and stuff.... I would love to hear more about your transition if you don't mind! :D

We're going to transition T to a toddler bed so we can use the crib for the next LO. We will probably try to do it while Im pregnant but we'll have some time afterwards since the new baby will sleep in a PnP in our room for a while.

I was due in September with LO2 and transitioned DD to twin bed in June. We made a big deal out of it; let her nap in our room and made the transition so that when she got up we took her in, she was super excited.

We made the switch about 4-5 months before LO2 was due. LO1 was 15 or 16 months and did great! I was nervous since LO1 was so young, but she never figured out that she could climb out of her big girl bed. I think she just saw it as a bigger crib. I wanted as much time as possible between the transition and LO2 using the crib.

This is good to know since LO is still in his crib. We have to rearrange his room or move to switch up. At the time of going to a toddler bed, we're planning on night potty training too on the advice of our former daycare owner.

@autumnlove: nope- we put E in the pack and play for 2 months in our room and made the switch at the two month mark. C did fantastic with the switch at 28 months! I wanted as much sleep as I could get before the new baby and figured he would try to regress when E arrived anyway.

Plus I'm too stinkin cheap to buy a second crib :silly:

When did you transition your toddler into a new bed?

LO 1 is in a crib converted into a toddler bed right now and I need it for LO 3 this fall. (LO 2 is still in her crib too) Is it better to transition before or after the baby is actually here? I figure the baby will be in our room for the first 2-3 months?
