I like the following ideas:
-Pretend food/kitchen/diner area
-Dress Up/Play Space (maybe with a cool small stage)
-Arts/Craft Space
-Lego/Magnatile building space
-TV station (could be paired with a gaming spot)

We also have a bounce house that we pull out for our basement...I LOVE it! So do the kids...

In addition to the stations idea people have, i would add some type of play gym equipment like a slide, a small trampoline, some mats, maybe even a little bar to hang onto (like a child-sized pull-up bar). Not awesome for the older kids but great for the younger ones.

We have our playroom set up like centers. An easel/art table/area with different supplies, a lego table, a play kitchen with shopping cart, a reading area with a low bookshelf so kids can self select some different toys (magnatiles, etc). The only thing I want to have that I don't have is a movie watching area but we don't have a tv in there yet.

I just saw an article where a grandma transformed her playroom....lemme see if I can find it.

eta: I can't find it, but basically she made it like the playspaces with individual stores--a supermarket, a doctor's office, a fire station. And then for older kids, a hang out area with giant bean bags, a gaming system, a computer/tv, maybe some Maker activities/products.

I'd do a mounted Smart TV (for easy access to movies on Netflix) as well as a game system for the older kids. For the younger ones I'd just buy things specific to what their interests currently are. I'd do maybe a low kid sized table, a lot of craft stuff for the middle age kids, because the younger ones will use it eventually. For the littles I probably wouldn't go *too* crazy - maybe just some smaller kids toys and books....because they're going to outgrow it fast.

I like the idea of stations as well. Art, train/Legos/Duplo table, play kitchen/food/table (my son loves having a table to serve us food on) and maybe an indoor trampoline and other gross motor things.

But I don't know how much the older two would enjoy those (outside of regular Legos) especially within in the next two wars. So maybe a cabinet with board games/books and a TV with some movie options and a video game system would be a great addition (a system like the Nintendo Switch (currently hard to find) or a Wii U would be great for that age range) if parents aren't against the idea.

To add to some of the great ideas here: if it's a larger area, I'd also add some tent/tunnel stuff that folds away easy so they can all run around and do some good physical play together. Maybe even a mini indoor trampoline with the netting around it. Have a blast. :) I also love @Boogs idea.

@looch: agree. With those ages I would look at a game system (or talents a nice mounted Tv). Maybe a nice table or desk that could be used for crafts and logos.

A teepee for the younger kids to snuggle in and book read, an easel for art projects and a train table (even if not into trains, you can use it to house doll houses, imaginext super hero places, paw patrol vehicles, etc.), and/or a lego table. Also a display shelf for books.

I'd do an awesome art area, a building area with big unit blocks and magnatiles, assuming she likes sitting down to play with them I'd get a bunch of stem kits and things like kiwi crate too. Maybe a light table? I'd also try to put in a gross motor option- does she have room somewhere for a little tikes bounce house? Maybe the gonge hill tops or mountain tops would be fun. If it were me I'd also peruse pbk and land of nod for fun ideas like a cool tent. She could set up a reading nook and fill it with tons of books.

Same, though I'd stick mostly to imaginative toys. A table with amazing art stuff. An area with a big train set, and maybe a set of big blocks and then small soft blocks. Some kind of doll house/fire house with figures. Dress up. Maybe a little puppet theater and soft puppets. Some kind of STEM exploration toys for the older kids. How fun!

Is it a large space? If so, I would have different areas: art, dramatic play (dress up, dolls, action figures, music player kitchen), train/lego/block, books/bean bags, etc.

What would you buy?

My mom came into a considerable amount of money (so cost isn't really prohibitive) and wants to upgrade her toy collection for her grandchildren. She's basically starting with nothing. The ages of the children are 8.5, 6, 5, 2, and 1.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!
