As soon as my 2.5 year old had decided that he was done with diapers he asked to not wear one at night too so we told him that he needed to not pee in his pull up for a month (we explained that to him with a trip that was coming up so he had a time reference). I think in that time we had one wet pull up so we quit using them as we had promised him and he has been fine since. It was really important though that he knew what he was was to do.

ETA: we don't wake him at night but he isn't the most verbal kid and we have noticed that when he starts crying/whimpering at night that he for 85% of the time needs to go to the bathroom. He doesn't yet go himself although he could (he can get out of bed and access the bathroom).

We're attempting the "wait it out" aspect for night training, too (and used OCPT with huge success for day training!), but C is almost 3 1/2 and still wakes up with a full pull up every morning!

She's been doing well with undies during her 3-hour nap and can go up to 5ish hours during the day, but we tried undies for a few nights and she peed in them and didn't even wake up! I'm nervous that we're going to end up like one of those parents in the book who sends their school aged child to slumber parties with a diaper 😳

This thread makes me feel better...DD is day trained and my mother is adamant that I have to wake LO to put her on the potty around midnight because that's what my mom did for me. That sounds like just about the least fun thing ever so I'm not doing it :silly: I'm hopeful she just starts to have dry diapers. She's done it a few times but nothing consistent .. Im in no rush though !

Adding to the chorus of people who didn't night train and waited for a month of dry diapers before going diaper free. Good luck!

@Dagny: We didn't wait for dry overnight diapers because we figured out quickly once we day trained, that he would go any time he was in a diaper at all. Muscle memory, I guess. We had to cut them cold turkey and it worked. He was over the 3 year mark, though, and would often wake up after he had peed at night for me to change him, so he couldn't sleep through it. We used the piddle pads I had left over from the hospital under his sheet for easy cleanup, but we never needed it.

Thanks all! Waiting for a month of dry diapers makes a lot of sense. Waking to go to the bathroom sounds terrible, haha! LO usually takes his diaper off himself right when he wakes up and goes to the bathroom. He's done this a couple times in the middle of the night too. I do find it a little hard to tell if the diaper is TOTALLY dry when I throw it away but I'll have to pay closer attention.

I never woke her up at night - I don't want to set up that as a routine. I waited for a month of waking up dry and then we took the plunge

We hadn't planned on night training but then we had several nights in a row where LO woke up in the middle of the night and used her travel potty (took off a diaper!! To do that) so she night trained herself. We PTed after she turned 3 though. She only has wet the bed on nights she is too exhausted to wake herself up to pee so maybe 3 times in 6 months.

I would let him try going without a diaper. But I'm told that I am brave.

I just waited for a month of dry nights. She was ready at 2.5 for nights and naps.
Never woke her up... Cause that would mean I'd have to get up. :silly:

I didn't do anything with LO 1 except wait for her to be consistently dry overnight. We started potty training in April (at 2 years, 3 months) and she was consistently dry around Sept. I still put her in a diaper for 2 more months before we went to undies. She does not go to the bathroom overnight.

LO 2 has been dry overnight for the last 2 weeks so she might be ready? I will wait a few more weeks!

If you night trained separately from day training, did you wake up your child at night to go to the bathroom to start? We used the OCPT method for potty training several months ago and it worked great for us. I didn't read the night training section in depth initially but I do recall the author talking about waking your child up every few hours to take them to the bathroom. How did you night train? I should add DS will be 3 in April and has asked a couple times if he doesn't have to wear a diaper to bed.
