I'm going to buck the trend and share that I STARTED nursing to sleep at six months when we hit a perfect storm of teething, sleep regression, crawling and wonder week. Nursing to sleep seriously saved my sanity and I actually kinda enjoy it :-)

Around 5 months or so he just stopped falling asleep while nursing so I put him down awake and that was that. He was just ready. Occasionally he will still fall asleep but then I just put him down not-so-gently and he sees he is in his own bed.

@SAHM0811: how old was she when you started putting down awake?

It's sounding like 4-5 months is a big turning point. I know you can continue nursing to sleep but I would prefer to be able to put her down awake and have her sooth herself, when she's ready. And I don't want to wait too long and make it harder on us both, or try too soon since she's still just a bbaby :)

I would feed her as much as she wanted, then brush her teeth... Then we would read books, darken the room and turn on white noise, then pat to sleep. I was amazed when it first happened so smoothly and we just never went back. If she asked for milk, I would tell her no and offer water instead. I was really worried about cavities, so brushing after nursing was important to me, and that's how the cycle was broken.

I started with naps awake and gave him a bottle before bed as long as he wanted it (still now at 1 year). Sometimes he falls asleep while eating, sometimes goes to bed after. I feel like he learned just fine eventually. He probably started going down awake around 4 months, maybe 5.

We're at 8.5 months and still doing it. It really doesn't bother me - I kind of view it as our special time at the end of the day. It also helps that other people can put her down at night. They just do a bottle and then rock her. She starting to not fall asleep while nursing, so I'm attempting to just put her down when she's done. Rocking doesn't seem to work as well anymore. She fusses a bit, but tonight she put herself to sleep.

I stopped nursing her to sleep when she was around 16 months old. DH had to take over the bedtime routine. First couple weeks were pretty rough, but now, 3 months later, I can do the bedtime routine and put her down and she doesn't ask to nurse (she still nurses a couple times a day)

I read the no cry sleep solution around the time LO stopped falling asleep while nursing... maybe 6 months? i felt confident i could use the methods in the book to get him falling asleep on his own... but just never did. i still hold him til he's asleep even now at 14 months :)

@Foodnerd81: @Bookish: We rocked, not nursed, to sleep and did no cry sleep solution around 5 months-ish with great, lasting success. It took makes 2 weeks before he was going in wide awake but dang, that was an amazing feeling.

My DH does bedtime and has since she was about a month old. Getting her to sleep without nursing used to involve a lot of shushing and rocking and the swing. But now she goes to sleep on her own and probably has since she was around three months (5.5 months now). We didn't need to do CIO for that...it just kind of happened. I still nurse her to sleep for every. single. nap. I wish I could find an alternative to that because it's really annoying being the only person in the world who can get her to nap!

@Bookish: We don't even do 'pretty much' asleep-- it's like, wait until she is OUT, then wait five more minutes before putting her down. She would wake up and take forever to get back otherwise.

@JoJoGirl: I am so hopeful this is out experience! I tried this weekend, when she was just having an awful weekend to begin with, and it did not go well (the baby whisperer method of patting, shhing, etc but not leaving her). But she's only 10 weeks, maybe in a few more weeks we will have better luck.

I've been wondering the same thing. We nurse to pretty much asleep, and I haven't quite figured out how to put her down awake.... Id love to read her a book before bed but I worry it'll wake her up too much!

I think around 14 weeks when she was out of the '4th trimester' and I didn't want to ingrain bad habits! I started doing a book after nursing and before bed so she was still full but awake. I was surprised how well she did- longest it ever took her to go to sleep was 20 mins of fussing and never got hysterical.

If you started out nursing to sleep and transitioned away from it, how and wen did you switch? Thankfully C has been going down a lot easier the last couple of days (no frantic desparate posts at 3 am this week!). But we nurse to sleep and I can't see how we will break the habit without CIO or something later on. She can also be rocked to sleep but it takes even longer, but one day I hope to be able to put her in her crib awake. Wondering when and how other people made that transition.
