We are at 7 months and I'm struggling to keep up. I thought once she started solids her milk intake would go down. She's still taking about 16 ounces during the day plus 4 nursing sessions.

@bee: how is this going? I started giving our LO one formula bottle everyday around 3 months when he had a growth spurt and I couldn't keep up. I REALLY didn't want to do it at first but as soon as I did I was really relieved. It was nice, b/c as you know, formula is more filling so we would give it to him at bedtime and he seemed to sleep a little longer/better.

A week or two later he cut back on how much milk he was drinking but we decided to keep up with the daily formula bottle b/c every day or so I was able to freeze a little bit of milk.

@BabyBoecksMom: If pumping is hurting, you might want to consider a different size flange.

I wish I could have done breastmilk the whole time but I had to supplement with formula since I just started pumping (that pump hurts!).

Every night around 6, she gets so fussy and will barely breastfeed, so I would give her as much breastmilk as she would take and then give her about 2 oz of formula. That seemed to be the perfect amount.

@mrs. wagon: Now that's a good idea- if you can increase her calorie intake at each feed during the day, you'll be able to phase out the night nursing sooner.

@mrs. bee: You're not a dairy cow, woman!! Formula at this stage will help you and her, it's not taking anything away!

@Mrs. Bee: she's getting so much great milk I don't think one bottle of formula a day will affect the benefits she's getting!! Plus she might have trouble transitioning... why don't you just mix an ounce or two of formula with breastmilk for each feeding? That way she's still getting breastmilk round the clock, but it'll stretch your supply more. PLUS it'll get her used to the taste of formula. That's how we did it with RJ-- increased the formula, decreased the breastmilk in each bottle each day until it was totally formula.

@aunt pol: @mrs. wagon: she's 5 months old and takes 4 bottles (20oz) in the day and nurses at night. i'm barely producing enough to keep up with her at this point.

i don't know why i can't cut myself a break and give her one bottle of formula... it would make my life so much easier!

that IS a lot of milk!!!

when we weaned RJ from the breast at 7 months, we started with 2 formula feedings a day, I believe. We quickly got it down to just 1 bottle of pumped milk a day, at bedtime. everything else (breakfast bottle, lunch bottle, dinner bottle) was formula.

That sounds like an awful lot of milk, all in! How old is she again? You could easily replace even two feeds with formula to give yourself some kind of a break!

I dream of quitting pumping. I would be fine doing it 2-3 times a day, but Olive just increased her intake and I need to do it 5-6 times a day to keep up, on top of nursing!

If you supplement breastfeeding and breastmilk with formula, how many times do you to it each day?
