I'm also pretty picky, most fruits and (cooked) veggies are a no for me...yuck lol we did BLW(and some purées) with DS. So far he hasn't been too picky(he's 15.5 months old). The only thing he so far has shown that he doesn't really like is fruit....but I can't blame him lol we still give him fruit and I give him foods that I don't like, in hopes of curbing pickiness

It has been a real nonissue for my daughter. I am an extremely picky eater, which I attribute to a super over active bitter taste sensation. Most foods just taste really bitter and kind of painful to me. My daughter isn't like that at all. From the start, I just fed her a big variety of foods, tons of stuff I didn't like. I never made it about MY food versus HER food. She's always welcome to eat what I eat (which certainly makes you clean up your diet). I always have my own plate of food at dinner, and she just happily eats a little of mine and a lot of what I've made for the rest of the family.

When she's older, I just plan to tell her the truth - my tongue is broken, and it doesn't like most foods. If she goes through a phase of imitating me and being picky, it'll be ok. She is a really adventurous eater now, and I think it'll stick over the course of her life.

I think your kids will pick up on the "pickiness" if it's there. I know I remember noticing how much my dad disliked veggies. But here are some things I think may help:
1) try everything! Especially when your kids are older. They need to see you modeling the willingness to put different foods in your mouth, chew it, and shallow it - even if its only one bite.
2) buy & serve different foods. If its never in the house because you don't like it, they'll never get the chance to see if they like it.
3) fake it. I seriously take a bite of veggies I don't like and then take a swig of milk or something to get it down. Or mix my peas with chicken to disguise the taste.
I'm not an expert or anything, but I'm a recovering picky eater & these are working for me/us. :)

@Torchwood: My husband is the same way about fruit. As long as I've known him he'll only consume fruit in smoothies. Recently I started adding a piece of fruit to salads at dinner time. I fully expected him to eat around the fruit but apparently he was ok with the fruit when it's cut up into bite sized pieces and topped with a little oil & vinegar in a salad. He's requested apples, pears, & peaches in salads. Just thought I'd throw that out there for you.

I don't know what to do about the pickiness. I'm pretty picky in that I hardly eat any condiments and most kinda freak me out. Hopefully that won't come up with LO for a while.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Don't like strawberries except in smoothies, watermelon at all (though I really should try it again now that I'm at least trying to branch out), and apples are extra gross.

I'm very picky but I still feed things I don't like to LO. We always have fruit just for her, DH and I don't really eat it.

DH is extremely picky. The list of stuff he doesn't like is longer than the list of stuff he does!! I honestly don't know what we'll do.

@Torchwood: I'm like you! I love a glass of OJ but can't stand to eat an orange. What about strawberries or watermelon? Those are my two go-to fruits. And Granny Smith apples! I like the sour taste.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Taste for most, texture for all. Even things that I like in juice form (like orange), I don't like the taste of.

i am also extremely picky! (and like yours, my dh will eat anything!)

we mostly did blw with lo and i agree with you, letting him learn what he likes on his own early on has been great. honestly, when he's old enough to notice that i don't eat what he eats i think i'm just going to have to suck it up and shove the veggies in. i don't want to be one of those "do as i say, not as i do" parents.

My ILs call me a picky eater. I'm not picky -- I just dislike the foods *they* enjoy. I recently (in the last 2-3 years) added chicken into my diet sparingly but I don't eat red meat, other white meats, or sea food, and I don't drink milk (but I eat milk based products). So, I'm labeled picky. I dislike the term!

What do you dislike about fruit? The taste? Texture?

How do you handle that with LO's? I'm an EXTREMELY picky eater. No fruits except a few in smoothies, *very* few vegetables, etc. I'm working on it and have managed to branch out some, but I feel like I'm never going to eat the way I'd like to. I don't want to pass that on to any kids through watching me. I get that they could just inherit my tastes, but I don't want them to see me turning my nose up at things and deciding they must be yuck. And I don't think I'm a good enough actress to tough it out with things I really don't like. I tend to gag on those things. Thankfully DH is the least picky eater I know, so he'll be great, but what can I do to minimize the damage I can do.

Note- We plan on BLW, so I'm hoping letting them learn things they like when they're still young enough to not even necessarily be eating at the same time I am (or at least not notice if there are some differences) will help.

Also, any tips on getting adequate nutrition? I know I'm doing badly, and I take a lot of supplements, but that gets expensive.

And lastly, am I the only one who really hates the having to use the word "picky?" It implies that I choose to be this way. I hate it! I'd give anything to love everything the way DH does.
