I really think it depends on how strongly the parents identify with their origins. My dad's family is from Germany (although he is not) and they hung on to a lot. Food, customs, holidays, language and that was passed on to me. Nothing special was done, it's just how he lived his life. My mom came to Canada from Holland when she was 12 and her family worked hard at "fitting in". We didn't celebrate Dutch holidays, I think I've eaten 3 Dutch foods and therefore I don't really associate with being Dutch (even though I am just as much Dutch as German).

Our future LO will 1/2 Korean, 1/2 Jewish and we plan to raise him/her Korean. Chances are no matter what we do people will see them as more Jewish than Korean, but at home we'll be eating mostly Korean food, incorporating some Korean language, and taking LO to Korea once in a while. We also plan to give them a hyphenated last name so that we're not just reinforcing a white/Jewish identity.

@shopaholic: Hard to tell, but the kids eat mostly Korean food so they may identify with that side? I will teach them important Japanese concepts, like duty, obligation, loyalty and honor.

I blogged a bit about Charlie and Olive's potential self-identity options here!

DH is half Japanese and half Caucasian. He really only identifies with his Caucasian half and I find this really sad. His mom is 100% Japanese and is not really Americanized at all so it would have been easy for them to be exposed to Japanese culture growing up, however the school district they grew up in discouraged their mom from speaking Japanese to them and because she did not know any better she listened. She rarely cooks Japanese food because my FIL and BIL do not like it and she claims she is a bad cook.

Our children will be 1/4 Japanese and I wish I or DH knew more about the culture and language so we could teach them more about their roots.

I am half black, half white, and my sister and I definitely leaned more toward our Caucasian side. My grandmother didn't visit much, as it was an 18 hour drive, so we spent most family gatherings with my dad's side of the family. We look more Caucasian, but I have had people ask if I was Latina or Korean. One of my BFF's is Korean, and people often thought we were related.

LO will be 3/4 Caucasian.

My LO is half Korean, half Cantonese. She is leaning more towards her Korean side (my side) because I and my family is around her more than my husband's side. It drives my MIL insane.

Our LOs are half Caucasian and Asian. I think they will lean more towards the Asian side as I am having them learn the language? Not sure though. Also, my first looks a lot more Asian than my second so I wonder if they might identify with different sides!

I am half Chinese (dad was born in Thailand but the family is Chinese), half white American. My dad never exposed my brother and I to the Thai/Chinese languages or cultures so I definitely identify as white.

Now, DH is French and we live in Austria and probably will stay here for a few years. I am curious as to how DS will identify when he is older. DH and I speak French at home, but I speak English to DS and he is currently in a German/English part time daycare.

Noelle is 1/2 korean 1/2 taiwanese. even though she's 100% asian, i think she will still identify more with her korean side since my in-laws live with us and she has had so much more exposure to the korean language and food.

we do want to send her to a chinese immersion school though for her to learn mandarin. we think that learning mandarin would help her so much in the future, and if she could learn just one language it would be that one.

I'm Filipino with Spanish, Chinese, and a smidgen of European ancestry (I'm talking way back). I think of myself as only Filipino, especially since a lot of Filipinos are so mixed. DH is Swedish as far back as it can be recorded.

We live in Sweden, so DD will grow-up Swedish. But I'll teach her Filipino customs and she'll eat Filipino and Asian food! I wish Tagalog came to me naturally so that I can talk to her in the language, but I can count on my mom to do that over Skype.

good question! LO is 1/2 chinese and half caucasian. Most of our friends (and his baby friends) are korean-canadian or chinese-canadian, but of course he'll go to regular school with everyone else and meet lots of caucasian people, in addition to his cousins and dh's family who live here. we may move to china one day when he is still a child, so that could change things.

i think that he will be like me (chinese canadian) and identify as canadian, with an intrinsic understanding and appreciation for chinese culture and food! i'm guessing the language will be mostly lost to him, unless we actually move there :)

I'm 100% Filipino & DH is 1/2 Korean & 1/2 Filipino. So that makes our little guy 3/4 Filipino & 1/4 Korean,

Our goal is for baby t to identify equally with both cultures. The hubs was born in South Korea and has strong ties to his Korean culture (and the food is so good!). And I grew up in a rich Filipino environment and want our son to experience the same :)

I am not personally mixed (just boring old white, ha), but DH is Ecuadorian so we'll have mixed children. We've discussed it a little bit, but since our future child(ren) will grow up in the US and be surrounded by US culture we want to do all that we can to make sure they identify with their Ecuadorian side as much as they can. Do do this we'll...

-Speak Spanish at home
-Make Ecuadorian food 2-3x/week for dinner
-Celebrate Ecuadorian holidays (Independence day, Day of the Dead, 3 Kings Day, etc) and make all the special foods that go along with them
-Make them play futbol (soccer)....hehehehe. And cheer on the Ecuadorian national team when they play!

As our family grows and evolves we will probably figure out more ways to do this, and know what will work best for our family!!

If you or your LO are "mixed" - which culture do you (or do you think your LO will) tend to identify more with?

This will be an interesting one I'd like to hear @Mr. Bee respond to! :) I think Charlie and Olive are 1/2, 1/4, 1/4 right?
