I kept my maiden name as a second middle name when I got married but I rarely use it. I usually just go by First Last, and if I need to add a middle initial, I use the initial from my first middle name. I think even my driver's license only has a single initial on there. It doesn't seem to cause any problems. All our legal stuff has my full name, but that's really it.

My lo has two middle names from each set of grandparents. So far we haven't run into any problems and I'm happy with it bc I feel like both families are represented :)

@HazelEyes: yay! glad more people are doing this. I told my BFF this morning and she was super skeptical lol. She's like ummmmmm how about just use an honor name from your fam next time. So I think I will need to get a tiny bit of a tough skin about this because we may get some eyebrows from ppl in our real life. But I think doing 4 names will make me happy :)

@Mae: I'm really glad you made this post. I've been vacillating about this for a while! I was considering it for myself when I got married, and ended up just not changing my name bc I couldn't decide what I wanted to change it to. Now that I'm about to have a baby any day now, I have been struggling with wanting my last name in my LO's name and wanting to use my grandmother's name as a middle name but not knowing if four names was "too much."

So happy to hear this is not as odd as I thought it might be and everyone seems happy with their 4 names! I talked to my husband and he's totally supportive. So I think our LO will officially be: Fiona June MyMaiden HisLast

Woot for having a name!!

I have had two middle names since I got married. For me, it's a huge pain--but I think there are some specific reasons for that:

1) I go by a nickname of my (original) middle name. So, that's kind of always been a pain anyway, and now it's even worse since there are four names to sift through. (I honestly probably should have dropped my first name when I got married--I never went by it, but I felt like that was disrespectful to my parents somehow.)

2) I bought our house under my maiden name, and now the legal forms are all confusing.

So, yeah, for me, it's a pain. But maybe that's mainly due to ADDING a fourth name and I wouldn't have had the same issues if I started out with all of them. :) I will say, though, folks seem to have had good experience filling out forms/etc, but generally speaking for anything financial (loans, banking, etc) people HATE ME when they are trying to figure out how to fit my name into their systems.

Good luck on your decision! Sounds like you have lots of awesome names picked out. So excited for you and your DH about your soon-to-arrive LO!

Just to add, when I got married and changed my name I dropped my maiden all together. I didn't like my last name, and had a strong attachment to my middle names.

I kept my middle name and made my maiden name a second middle name when we got married. It is rarely an issue, but I would decide very early how you want forms written out. I wasn't thinking when I got my new drivers license and had it written as First AB Last. My passport says First A Last, so when I book flights I have to make sure to put the write name. It's a minor thing so I wouldn't let it stop me if it was important to me, just something to be aware of.

The social security office will actually only take a certain number of letters total for all the names, at least that is what I was told. So, maybe just double check that you can do that.

Some places are also easily confused by an extra name or will only take the first middle name or first middle initial, so something to also think about, maybe which name you would want as the first middle name.

If it's a name you love, go with it! If LO is really so disturbed by it, it's not like they can't change it later in life. ;)

LO has two middle names (both of our mother's first names) and so far it's never been an issue. On forms that allow space for the full two names, I write them out. Most of the time we shorten to "HL" as her middle name, or just use "H" if only 1 initial is allowed.

I changed at marriage- I have no problems with it, and I like it. Buuuuuut, others get all hung up and whiny about it- like yesterday when we were filing birth certificate paperwork. These days I just tell the person to suck it up because that's my name. I think if it were 2 first names I would hear less about it than 2 last names.

Both my kids have 2 middle names - one from my side and one from DH's side. We wanted to use the first names we liked but also honor our families. It has never been an issue, but on our provincial health card it only shows the first middle name. DH also has 2 middle names and it hasn't made a difference.

J has two middle names (his fathers first name and my maiden name) and so far it hasn't been an issue! On legal documents you just put both, or two initials. But anything else, we just use his first middle name.

My brother and my sister both have two middle names and they have never complained either - they like the oddity of it.

@Mrs Spoon: I did think about that too. If my LO wanted to take her husband's name, adding it on would really be a bit too much (5 names!) so then she'd have to decide between dropping her "normal" middle name, my maiden name, or her father's name. Obviously we'd support whatever. But it makes it a little more complicated than it was for me when I got married :)

I have two middle names and do does LO. It doesn't bother me. The main thing was deciding to keep my maiden name legally when I got married. I decided to drop it. As an adult I often use a middle initial if I don't want to write the whole thing. If you like how all the names go together go for it. It's really no hassle.

I've had two middle names since birth and it's never been an issue! When I was younger I actually loved it because it made think I was a special little snowflake  But really, it's never been an issue. On forms and everything I've always just put the first initial. My parents did it for the same reason you are..one name is from somebody on her side and one is from his side.

How annoying is it?

I think I've finally (finally!) decided on a name for our LO. My hangup has been feeling like my family is sort of unrepresented because our LO's middle name is a family name for DH (which I love) and she will have his last name too.

So now I'm considering a second middle with my maiden name. When we got married, I dropped my middle and took my maiden as my middle name. So it would be sort of nice that she'd share that with me/my family.

But then I feel guilty. I dropped my middle name because I thought 4 names would be a hassle-- and now I'm considering saddling my kid with that?

So, if you have two middle names, or if you gave your LO two middle names… is it a hassle? how does that work with forms? Do people get confused? I honestly don't think that we'd use her second middle name hardly ever, but it would just sort of make me feel good that her name represented my family too.
