There are sometimes cards you can downgrade to that don't have a fee. If you've had the card for a while and you are a good customer, I would call them and request that they waive the annual fee before closing the account. Back in my bad-credit days I had a card with an annual fee (it was all I could qualify for), and once I rehabbed my score and had been a customer of theirs for a bit I asked them to waive the fee and said if they didn't I would close the account. Been a no-fee card ever since. It's actually a rather new card that I got within the last 5 years. I should close it. I have still have older cards. Although, I'm hoping to pay off all of my credit cards soon, so I might have to keep a card with an annual fee. I read that I need tell them to close my account in writing and to make sure they write 'closed by customer' on my account. Apparently it looks better. If it is your oldest card, closing it will likely hurt your credit score so I'd keep it open since you said you might be getting a mortgage soon.
