my character/fitness interview was scheduled to be near my house, and had to be completed before they could give me an admission date. Sounds like 3rd department is same day though. FYI I tried to switch 2nd to 1st, since i was living and working in manhattan, but they said that it is based on the address you give when you first sign up for the exam. Don't know if it's different for 3rd department.

@Mrsbells: If you work in NY, you can request to move to that department. Otherwise, you'll have to come to Albany to be admitted in-person. They do your character/fitness interview the same day (the other departments break them up, I believe) so at least that makes it a little easier!

@Mrsbells: Anytime!! If you're in New York (Manhattan) or Bronx, you get admitted in the 1st Department. If you're in Brooklyn, Queens, SI, LI, Westchester, and some other counties, you get admitted in the 2nd Department. All out of state admission are through the 3rd Department in Albany. It's simple but confusing all at the same time! Good luck!!

@MrsClownfish: yes I think once the exam is over I will start putting my forms together so by the time the results come out (and hopefully I pass) then it wont take too long to get sworn in

@edelweiss: Thanks
@Pirouette: yeah I heard NY is slow.. maybe because of the large volume of people?

@MungBean: Yeah thats exactly what my friend said

@MrsH: Thanks, I dont know if NY does that though...

@Mrs D: Yes I heard that as well, that the federal swearing in is done later

@LindsayInNY: Thanks for that information thats helpful, all the different departments confused me a bit. and thanks again for sending me the outlines :)

@ineebee: Thanks!!

@BlueWolverine: Lol yeah I'm surprised because I thought it would be an automatic thing, didnt realize it can be such a long process
@winniebee: Thanks for that I think 5 months wont be too bad for me to wait

@regberadaisy: I think thats right they do it groups

Thanks everyone, this is all very helpful. I Also took the July 2008 exam but failed by 18 points i didn't take a prep class that time so i am hoping it goes better for me this time.

I took the July 2008 bar exam -- got pass results in November which is when the July results are always released. Was admitted in March in the Second Department. It was supposed to be even later than that but my boss had a connection and got my character and fitness interview moved up. The only way to speed things up is to get all of your documents in as quickly as possible, which can be done before you get your results I believe.

You can only apply to one department in NY and it is based on your residency location. As someone else stated, I think you can use a different department if you work there but live somewhere else. But usually all out of state people are sworn in the third department in Albany.

I did everything as quickly as humanly possible and was sworn in in Feb (after taking in July and getting results in Nov). But it also depends which department you are in - some are faster than others. I was 2nd dept (since i was temporarily living in westchester), and i believe 2nd dept is a little faster than manhattan (1st). don't know about the others.

I also took connecticut and was sworn in in October (less than a month after getting the results). NY is SLOW!

I took NY bar exam in July 07. Once I found out I passed, it took a few months to fill out all the paperwork and gather all the necessary documentation. I think I got sworn in either June or July? I remember it taking forever to prepare all the documents and stuff.

DH took the MI bar exam in July, got his score in Sept/Oct time frame and was sworn in in November I believe. He was sworn in in Federal court at a different time and I think not until January - but that wait was a little longer because his dad swore him in so that took some coordination.

I took the NY bar exam July 2008, got results November 2008 and was sworn in April 2009. The earliest I saw people getting admitted was February 2009, maybe? You can fill out all of your paperwork before getting the results but can't submit it until you have results. I didn't know that and submitted it post-results which probably added a little bit of a delay to my admissions. It might also depend on which department you're being admitted to. They use the department you live in or, if you're out of state, the 3rd department. I believe you can also request to have your department changed if you work in a different one (I lived out of state but worked in NY).

DH took the NY Bar Exam 7/2010 and was sworn in 5/2012 by the judge he was clerking for. I don't know if they could've done it earlier, but that's how it went with my husband.

I took it in July and was sworn in the following June. It took forever. I'm trying to remember if any of that was my fault (late with docs, etc.), but I don't think so.

I took MA and NH in July 2005. NH got results in September and sworn in in November. MA got results in October and sworn in in December. I think NY is similar to MA, which was....5 months?

Good luck!

Okay I am planning to take the NY bar exam this Summer and I am hoping for the best. I was just wondering how long it took you after passing to gain admission and be sworn

A friend of mine told me it took about 7months. Is that typical? Did you apply to more than one department in NY?
