@bhbee: We also live in TX and the heat is awful in the summer. It's like our winter - many days when you just can't go outside!

I'm looking into camps with a local dance studio, and with a Spanish immersion preschool we are considering for the fall. Both do several weeklong camps running all summer but we will probably do 1 or 2 at the dance place and 1 or 2 at the preschool. We might also sign her up for a VBS. I want to keep her busy because I will have a newborn / infant, DH will be back at work and it's going to be hoooot.

my DD just turned 5. last summer when she was 4.5 we did a ballet class (weekly for 10 weeks), VBS at the same church as her preschool (AM only), and a week of morning camp (which in retrospect we should have skipped). The summer she was 3 we did ballet and music weekly which was better. We have almost 4 months off preschool and live in TX where it is regularly over 100 in the summer with blazing sun so we need structure and things to do even if not specific classes, but she was old enough to enjoy the classes and I enjoyed making new friends with the other moms. For camps I learned that for her at least, it needs to be with friends she already knows to be fun. I think this year at 5 we will do 1-2 camps with friends and she'll be more the right age this time.

We don't do summer activities because rather than 1 day a week, they seem to be camp like events that run for a week at a time. We have lots of play dates and do day and overnight trips to my parents, get passes from the library for museums, outdoor concerts, etc. Summers are so busy I haven't felt the need to sign up for anything.

My kiddo loves classes, especially gymnastics. She hasn't been to preschool yet but she will in the fall... We plan to enroll her in one class per summer so she can keep up the socialization. I get kinda lazy about play dates and tend to just take her places alone when it's nice out so the class provides structure to her week.

Well not exactly the same but T is in daycare 8 hours a week at a private school so it's closed during the summer. Our babysitter is coming over for 4 hours on the same morning each week- but I'll be woryso I need this time. We have an outdoor playgroup and story hour to keep us busy. If I find a good activity I will do it. We just don't have many closeby options.

Our preschool is also an activity center and they offer summer camp. We'll probably do that. Half days inside and outside including water play. (It's in NYC on a rooftop playground so it's somewhat limited but still better than nothing).

I had my son in a nature preschool during the school year, they had weekly camps in the summer that he absolutely loved. Each week had a theme and it basically involved light crafting but most time was spent outdoors on the trails. Out of the 10 weeks that it was offered, we typically did 8 of them. I liked it because it was only 9-1, so you still had plenty of time in the morning and afternoon to do whatever you wanted.

My son's personality is one where he does really well in groups. This summer, even though I am planning to be home, I will still enroll him at least a few weeks, depending on what else is going on.

We are waitlisted for my DDs' summer school programs (we had a school-year spot and hoping a calendar-year spot opens up).

If they don't get into that, we'll probably do a couple week-long camps spread throughout the summer, and maybe pick a sport or two to play around with -- last summer we took a break from gymnastics and did swimming for 2 weeks (everyday) and tennis (once/week for 4 weeks). There's also a Free Forest School here that meets at different locations throughout the week that we'll look into.

I like having a good mix of things we can do on our own/flexibility and a couple things that are more structured in terms of us having to be there/interact with other kids & adults.

If your preschool is closed in the summer are you planning to enroll LO in any activities for those months?

We haven't done any formal activities beyond a parent/child playgroup for my daughter who will be 4 in April. She's been in daycare and now preschool 2-days a week. I really don't like to over-do activities and prefer to just have a lot of unstructured time.
However, some aspects of my daughter's personality are making me think I should enroll her in at least a weekly activity through the summer. She's doing swim lesson this spring, I was thinking maybe weekly soccer or dance class?

I did find some neat nature camps but they are week long camps and would involve a 40 minute drive each way.

my preference would be for an outdoor-based, physically active program. We will go to story time/playgroups at the library and get together with friends, and I'm pretty good about rhythms and routines that involve lots of outdoor time- but I think she'd benefit from an opportunity to be around a larger group of kids regularly, and from some scheduled physical activity.
