LO2 goes to a drop-in care/MOPS sort of thing 2 mornings/week that overlap with LO1. We have no family anywhere close. She's young and can only do late afternoon and by then my lo is in full on mama mode and I wind up chatting with a 13 year old... I'm on mat leave, and my older daughter goes to Bright Horizons drop in care sometimes (usually Wednesdays) if they have a spot. But I still have my baby with me. Every appointment I have been to in the last 2 years has been with a kid (now 2) in tow. It kinda sucks, if I'm being honest. Eta: even when I'm working, because of my child care situation, I get 0 non work time without my kids. Our families are far away, for the most part. BIL and his GF will watch her on occasion, if we have something we both have to go to without her, but it's rare. My toddler is starting a once a week, two hour, drop off program next week and I'm excited for both of us. And she will stay in it after the new baby is born in December so I'll have two hours a week with just the baby. Awesome sitters, those kids! Now we're home again, and she's mosty been watched by my mom when not at daycare. It's been really helpful to not have to do all my schoolwork/housework/errands at night and on the weekends. We've had my mom come 3 days a week since DS was 4 months old and now she watches him those 3 days while I work. But we pay her for her time because she needs the income. When I was at home, my mom was more of a mommy's helper in that I was always around the baby - she would cook or tidy the house or watch the baby while I slept. But I could run out for errands or we'd go on stroller walks together and I had some company at home while I was in the depths of PPD/PPA and DH was going through a super busy time at work. It also gave DH and I chance to have a weekly date night. It was definitely a luxury, but my mom needed the work and I really needed to take care of my mental health between having an extremely colicky reflux baby, long term sleep deprivation, and PPD/PPA. It was totally worth it. Ideally i would have her only 1 day or 2 half days. But that's hard to find (someone looking for those hours). It's a total luxury, but it helps me feel like myself. I don't need it as much now since I'm very comfortable and happy being a mom. I do ask my mom to help out on a weekly basis though. She will watch the girls (at her house) so I can go to appointments, run errands etc. It's really helpful! I feel bad asking her sometimes but she really is my best option.
