@T.H.O.U.: Yeah it is supposed to provide balanced meals in child care because there was so much variance. Next year at Montessori we will have to provide food.

Currently M (almost 14 months and we're in NY) gets morning snack with daycare and that's it.

They offer as part of tuition: breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, juice and milk. We only let her have morning snack and bring all other meals, snacks and beverages. It does not reflect what they're eating at all.

Her teachers have mentioned to us sometimes she looks at what the other kids are having. At this point we do not want her eating the CRAP they serve. If she gets to a point where she asks we might consider letting her eat their food one day a week?

Besides that one off comment they really have not made a big fuss about us bringing our own food in.

@kml636: @brownie: I had no idea there were state food programs for babies this young! I thought that didn't start until the kids were in the public school system.

@mediagirl: It also REALLY helps with my stress because its not like I HAVE to pack her food. If I get busy or haven't shopped, I just don't send anything and she lives and gets what they have.

Most of the school programs here do not allow you to provide your own food unless there is a medical reason. They are on a subsidy system which helps them provide food but only if it meets the food pyramid. We do have an allergy so we have sent food in the past. At this time, he is only allergic to soy and his current preschool is wonderful with making sure that the food is safe.

When he was struggling with weight gain, we also sent his special milk and he was given that at snack time.

My LO is only 6 months, but my Daycare is supposed to provide the food because shes' on the state "food program". So I think the state gives her money to feed my kid. I don't care, I bring her BM, organic formula in case I run out of BM, and organic baby food purees. The daycare provider has never blinked an eye... I think it's cheaper for her so she likes it.

What we decided to do is to supplement her with food from home in addition to the school food. We send a breakfast when we drop her off (something healthy like yogurt, banana, oatmeal, etc) and then she has breakfast with the class (fruit, starch, and milk).

We also supplement snack time. We send a snack tray with fruit and cheese and other healthy things but also let her have the cookies/crackers/junk that they feed. It wasn't fair to her or her teachers to not let her have what others were eating. It turns out the other kids actually want to eat her snack!

Tell me how it works for you.
Did they make a fuss about it?
Do you try to send the same type of things daycare is providing or do you send completely different things?
Do you worry your lo will want what everyone else has?
