We didn't do professional newborn photos, but I like to think I'm a pretty good photographer (and so is DH) and we have TONS of photos that we took.

My thing with the pro photos: what do you do with them? I mean, 2-3 really great ones framed in the house? Prints for grandparents? And then what? An album could be nice with the newborn ones, but I ended up making a 1st year album for DS with the photos we took throughout the year, and I really LOVE how that turned out.

That said, I will admit that my heart always melts a little bit when I see those adorable newborn photo shoots. :-)

I didn't bother and I'm glad I didn't. We got the ones from bella baby in the hospital and they were cute. These days people take so many pics on phones/cameras anyway... We did have one month photos taken at a studio that were cute though! But no expensive package...

We took our own using my iPhone and DH's art director skills and I was happy with them. I didn't need much-just something to document his teeny tiny cuteness.

we didn't get them, and i'm okay with that. i mean, i'm not against them either, but it's okay. we did get 6-month photos, though, so that could be factoring into the lack of regret.

@jetsa: that's insane prices. My photog (who does mostly weddings and is very featured on style me pretty & other famous wedding blogs) charged us like 400 for 2 hours and a USB of all our images

Try checking wedding photogs. Ive noticed more are featuring family and maternity sessions to grow with their clients

Sounds like a great deal $ wise. If you wanted to stick with that photographer, could you perhaps talk to your friends and family in advance about how many pictures and in what sizes they think they'll want to buy and then maybe you can just order the best picture(s) in those sizes and quantities as soon as the gallery is up and have them pay you back?

On the other hand, an unhelpful photographer isn't that great either. I'm curious as to why no tennis shoes, lol. Is there a reason why you really want the 3, 6, 9 month pictures, etc.? You probably could handle those with your own camera or a walk-in studio and maybe that would allow you to find a photographer in your price range who also offers digital prints.

FWIW, I haven't found a specialty newborn photographer who'll give you a shoot and digital prints for less than $500.

My parents bought the hospital photos. I don't regret not getting more professional ones done per se, but I do love all the props I see in newborn photos--and the quality of them. I will treasure the hospital photos but they are pretty terrible quality and not at all touched up.

We didn't have newborn photos done and it's something I definitely regret. I was so busy, exhausted, and overwhelmed as a new mom that I don't have many good pictures of him as a wee one. Definitely get *something* done--even if it's just the hospital photographer. Your photographer's package sounds like a great deal but I don't like her attitude.

We just bought the ones at the hospital.... we didn't do any thing outside of that... but we are really happy with the hospital ones so I don't regret not getting another set. :)

We did do 3 month shoots and all of those were terrible so I regret paying for those if that helps.

@Adira: haha right? Crappy photog but some pictures...thats where I'm stuck. I guess I'm lucky that my husband although he has no interest in it, is the better photog in our house so maybe he could handle it even if I can't.

ETA: the photog's pictures aren't crappy just her attitude.

I have a dSLR, so I just assumed I'd get some good photos of Xander as a newborn, but I was so busy feeding him and then exhausted, that I don't have very many pictures of him. I definitely regret not doing newborn photos.

But your photog sounds crappy, though the price sounds pretty good. So... I have no advice.

@swedishfish: @regberadaisy: Thank you for responding! I intend on taking some with my DSLR either way. This is more about whether or not I should pay the professional to take them as well. :)

@Mrs Green Grass: I've talked to 3-4 photographers here and none offer digitals. The one I chose doesn't even offer a package with all the digitals. Its 1-10 images for $300, 11-20 for $400 or 21-30 for $500 on top of the session fee for each session. Another in this area offered newborn+3,6,9,12 shots with digitals for $2,000.

Our doula acted as a photographer so we have some great shots of her freshly born...but they aren't things I'd display on a wall of my home or anything. She's still has like blood on her and whatnot.

The hospital photographer came in and did a few shots on her second day of life, and those are the ones I've had printed for display. It was really easy to do when we were in the hospital. And I've gone back and ordered additional prints online as the need arose.

We did not do an additional newborn shoot at home. I have no regrets!

We have a family shoot coming up when she will be 9 months old and that will be the first professional pictures we've had done as a family of three.

We never did newborn pics because LO went immediately to the NICU and stayed for 57 days. A part of me wishes we did something, but our minds were just crazed at that point! However, now, I am ok with not doing them and we are going to splurge instead on a professional photoshoot with the three of us (my SIL's idea!) I like that a lot better because it will show the whole family.

I regretted not getting newborn photos but we didn't have the money, I do photography as a hobby and thought I could DIY my newborn photos (obviously not expecting them to come out amazing!) but I was way to tired after birth to do that lol... but now that my son is a year, I prefer the pics of him that show his personality so much more.
urgh I wouldn't want to work with a photographer who wasn't helpful though or who only gave a week to order, maybe she is more flexiable with timing, could you ask her?

Yes, I def did. In retrospect I should have pulled out my DSLR and done something.

ETA: my regret is also amplified by the fact that I desperately wanted a e shoot but our photog cancelled last minute. I wanted maternity photos but we couldn't afford it. Same thing with newborn. Still now at 15 months we have yet to do a PRO family photo session. SO it just amplifies my regret more.

If you skipped professional newborn pictures, do you regret it?

I have a Nikon D5000 that I love but I am for sure an amateur, I love good pictures though.

I can't afford packages that include the digital proofs so the photog I've found does maternity+newborn+3,6,9,12 shots for $250. This includes no prints and she is supposed to have an online gallery within a week. Here's my main issue with it: You have ONE week to order pictures and that's it. It just makes me wonder if its even worth it. My mom is old school and 2.5 hours away so there's no way she'll be able to see the gallery and order within a week. I guess I just thought I'd be able to get a proof book and then talk to family members about which pictures they want. Also the photog is kind of unhelpful, like I asked her how to style for the maternity shoot and she kind of said wear whatever you want but not matching and no tennis shoes. She didn't even tell me if the shots would be studio or outdoors shots.
