@wheres_c: I think cooking it well will be just fine! When we started at 6 months, our son would gag often & I, while I wasn't too worried about choking, I did feel bad because gagging is Not a Fun Feeling. We pulled back and tried again at 7.5 months & he rarely gags now. So you could try again in a few months, if you want. :)

We did blw, but both of our girls didn't like baby cereals. They did eat rice, quinoa, cous cous and things like that.

We skipped rice cereal, but started doing oatmeal cereal with fruit once she started eating breakfast regularly. She loved it, and it helped her poop.

LO's only "grain" is quinoa. If you do quinoa I would start out with flakes or making something with flour since it is more broken down than the whole seeds and easier for them to digest, then move to the whole seeds. Quinoa flakes makes a cereal similar to cream of wheat/rice.

Our kids gagged on whole grain oatmeal, but steel cut might be ok, we used oatmeal cereal and mixed it with sunflower butter and they loved it, even though they didn't love purees in general.

I make a barley veggie stir fry at least once a week and they really love it. I use pearl barley, and some combo of red/orange/yellow peppers, mushrooms, and snow peas - if the veggies are soft and/or small enough, there shouldn't be reason to worry.

We did oatmeal, I just used steel cut oats since that's what I eat every day for breakfast. She's not that into oatmeal though :( And she doesn't seem to like quinoa either.

We introduced oatmeal around 6 months and did not do any "infant cereals." I think all the grains you mentioned would be good to try. FWIW even though we did BLW with Lorelei, she still is gearing up to be about as picky as big sis who was a more traditional puree baby.

We didn't skip the cereal but what we did was different variations on how thick it was. Lots of times it was as thick as oatmeal and every so often lo gags.

Quinoa has been one of our go-to's from the get go. We mixed it with squash or hummus, even yogurt. She would gobble it up. She still loves it but now she wants to use her spoon and it gets EVERYWHERE!

We skipped rice cereal (and are doing baby led weaning), but I think oatmeal is fine. Are you going to purée it at all or just cook it well so it's mushy?

I made her oatmeal from steel cut oats and also give quinoa when she was older. As well as congee from white rice and brown rice but all home made.

We skipped cereal and LO has been eating fruit/veg for the past two weeks.
What are your thoughts on introducing whole grain oatmeal? How about other grains (quinoa, amaranth, etc)?
I chickened out on BLW and would like to add some new textures to his diet but not at the detriment of his health.

What do you think? Oatmeal? Yay or nay?
