We have a weird layout called a 5 level split (so all the floors are half a staircase away and on the other side of the house). So our master is on level 4 in the back/left corner of our house and the nursery is on level 5 in the front/right corner of the house. So she is like 8 stairs and a hallway away, kitty corner. Because it is so far away with so many walls between we can't hear her when she cries in her bedroom from ours. We have a video monitor for her (which is sort of glitchy) and then also a cheapo audio monitor we leave plugged in all the time as a backup for when the video monitor goes out. It's not really that big of a deal... she still wakes up a few times per night but I just get a bit of exercise running up and down the stairs lol

It's not a big deal at all. My son is 15 months and doesn't usually wake up but when he does, I just walk downstairs. He's right below us so I can usually hear him but I like having the video monitor.

It's fine for us, too. She STTN and we have a Foscam so it's no big deal.

We have the same format here (2 up, 2 down and masters/nursery on the main floor)! We just moved our 2 yr old DD upstairs to her "big girl" room and the transition has gone well. We have a regular monitor but plan to add video soon. So far no issues, either for us or our daughter. We have a lot of concern among our family members about this, but honestly, if you are comfortable with it, you will be fine. I was so worried that there was some angle I hadn't considered, but it turns out that there isn't any real issue being on a separate floor (despite my MILs paranoia). The best part has been the ability to not wake up our DD by walking through the hallway, watching TV, cooking, talking with friends etc.

We are upstairs and moved S downstairs 3 months ago, no issues at all so far! We use a video monitor, we actually kind of like that we don't have to worry about waking him up by watching TV etc outside his room.

It will definitely be okay! Our master is downstairs and both kid rooms are upstairs. Currently the baby is sharing our room, but Xander has been upstairs on his own for months now - at least 6 months (he just turned 2). It's totally fine. We have a video monitor and he sleeps through the night, so it hasn't been a big deal at all. Once the baby is sleeping consistently through the night, he'll move upstairs into his own room too.

@Charm54: J has always been below us and we've never had an issue. He has a video monitor if he cries I go to him. I can see it being more of an issue once she's in a toddler bed but once again you'll figure it out

From a month or so old to 16 months old, LO slept on a different floor to us. It wasn't a problem. Since we moved she's now on the same floor.

It will be ok!

We have the master on the 1st floor and the rest of the bedrooms on the 2nd. LO has slept just fine up there since we moved her to her crib at 5 months. We have a video monitor, so we can check on her if needed. The only thing that kind of sucks is if we have a power blip in the middle of the night and the monitor trips, we have to go reset it because she is too far away for us to hear if we are sleeping.

....Tell me about logistics. Our house has a 2 up, 2 down format. Right now the master and nursery are right next to each other off the main living area. Once LO#2 comes along, the plan is to move DD upstairs and keep Baby in the nursery next to us. I figure if we stick a video monitor upstairs with C, it's no big deal.

However, when people find out we're expecting the first thing out of their mouths is "but where will C go?! Not upstairs??!! Are you going to move??".... I agree, it's not ideal, but we love our house and she STTN fine so I think it will be okay? She'll be 2 when we move her .... The only thing I can think is that maybe she will be scared being on a different floor than us?

Calm my fears...this will be okay, right??!!
