@BabyBoecksMom: The free session was just a consultation/sales pitch. Already did it. Wish I could just buy one session!

I will check out that IG - thanks!

@avivoca: I might do that. There is actually a BodyPump class at 8:30 AM one day a week though so I am going to see if that one is really full.

There are a lot of videos out there that you can do, but it really does help to have a trainer show you proper technique. My suggestion would be to look at the videos and look at yourself in a full-length mirror to see if you match it. Once you *think* you have the technique down, THEN use the free session with the trainer and tell them that you just want to make sure you have proper form.

Check out crystalmooreneale on IG. She loads 9 videos on one post (not sure how she does it!), which gives you a whole workout and shows proper form.

@daniellemybelle: Well, I won't say it. But it does stink that they don't feature more classes for everyone else.

Could you get away for one on the weekend and the S and K could have father/daughter time? I know you want to maximize family time, so that might be a better option than trying to go when he just gets home from work.

@blackbird: Was it an evening class?

@avivoca: That's a good idea. I really try to go during the day when it is good for LO's schedule, and not take away from family time in the evening... but they really cater to more of a 9-5 crowd so a lot of the classes are at 6:30 AM or 6:30 PM. I know what you are going to say here though ;)

@daniellemybelle: You could probably ask the front desk if there are any recommended times for the classes where it isn't as crowded. I typically avoid classes around lunchtime or right after work.

@blackbird: Good to know! Was the class big? So far, at the classes I've taken the instructor has not helped me with my form even though I know I'm flopping around like a wet noodle. ;) But they are cardio so less risk of injury.

@blackbird: @Mamaof2: They won't let me pay for one session. :( I'm having a really hard time justifying the expense. Maybe in a little bit when the exercise I'm doing now is getting easier. Right now I am plenty challenged by the treadmill and Zumba!

@nana87: I did the free "session" but it was a consultation/sales pitch. They don't show you anything. :(

Have any of you done a Body Pump class or something like that? Again, I am intimidated by it but they are free at my gym. I feel like they are too packed to be able to have correction of your form?

I've used the machines in the past, and stuff I read from various places, but I use a trainer now (got suckered in after my free session :silly: ) and it's so expensive but makes such a difference! dh does too--he was doing strength training for over a year on his own, and got into it with a buddy who had been a college athlete and so knew what he was doing, but after seeing a trainer he realized that what he was doing wasn't quite right. he's been seeing the trainer since the summer and it's made a really big difference. So yeah, I'd at least do the free session!

Definitely start with some machines! They have little diagrams on them but you can also look up videos. Or hop on right after someone else uses it. Watch others (sometimes this. Sometimes, this will backfire. So, watch people who are in really good shape who aren't lifting absurd amounts of weight, lol.). Watch yourself in the mirror!

I also think if you've never really lifted before, it's worth it to get at least one session in with someone so they can guide you on the basics. I like bodybuilding.com for how to's when trying new stuff. I would not get into large, complicated movements (clean and jerks, for example) without a coach, but that's likely a ways out from you trying.

@lilyann: That's awesome! I am, like, in another universe. :)

@looch: You make it sound so easy! I don't know how to use the machines at all and I don't know how to "do the circuit." I'm clueless!

@avivoca: I wish OrangeTheory offered childcare! I tried to ask if I could do just one session but she said they only do the packages, with 5 sessions being the smallest. That may not really be true - I can ask tomorrow.

@Madison43: Oh, I already did the free session. They were kind enough to be transparent that it was a "consultation" and not a training session. It was moderately helpful in terms of setting goals and so forth, but obviously didn't give me anything useful like teaching me how to work out!

@Eko: The strength training classes my gym offers seem packed (like 25+ people) and packed with people in great shape! I'm a little intimidated since I feel like I would be so behind everyone else. The cardio classes are not as full and have different shapes and fitness levels so that has been easier to join in with.

I've taken several strength training classes and those have helped me to maintain good form. I tend to use similar workout routines on my own that I got from the classes. I think though some of my strength training workouts are fairly basic. I don't really use the bar bell for anything.

In my experience, those free sessions are never worth it. Like you said, it's more of a sales pitch than teaching proper form. I think if you just do some light research (I think shape magazine has an app that has tons of different exercises to choose from) and then work out in front of a mirror, you'll be fine. Does your gym offer any strength training or circuit classes? Those could be helpful too.

You know I do OrangeTheory, so they focus on proper form and are quick to correct me if my form is lacking. I prefer to work out in front of a mirror so I can check my form. I think you can go in and maybe pay for one session and tell them that's all you can do right now. Then ask them to show you how to properly do the exercises (and maybe even work out a schedule to follow on your own) during that one session.

I pretty much trained myself! I am currently lifting to compete in a body building competition (bikini division). I learned from Youtube and IG. Also, I always lift right in front of the mirror, I don't care if it is obnoxious or not but I don't want to risk having bad form and getting hurt! Bodybuilding.com is a great resource as well.

As an aside, if you are creating an IG to keep you accountable, there are several HB mamas that have a fitness one

I joined a gym last week and I'm motivated to get in shape. There's a free consultation with a personal trainer where they try to sell you sessions. It's really not in the budget, but I would like to learn how to strength train especially since I'm paying for access to the whole gym - might as well. I have only ever done cardio or classes like yoga, Pilates, Zumba, etc.

It's tempting to get the trainer to have her show me what to do - but I'm trying to figure out how to not spend the money. Maybe YouTube videos? But they can't correct you. We're new to our city so I can't ask a friend really.

So, how did you learn?
