@avivoca: this is a really good reference on alcohol and breastfeeding. http://www.llli.org/faq/alcohol.html

Dr. Jack Newman, member of the LLLI Health Advisory Council, says this in his handout "More Breastfeeding Myths": Reasonable alcohol intake should not be discouraged at all. As is the case with most drugs, very little alcohol comes out in the milk. The mother can take some alcohol and continue breastfeeding as she normally does. Prohibiting alcohol is another way we make life unnecessarily restrictive for nursing mothers.

@Chillybear: Thank you! I sent seven ounces of BM to daycare today. Since I nursed her before we left, she will probably not need all seven ounces. She eats dinner as soon as we get home.

@avivoca: there is. Roughly 2 hours but it depends on the alcohol content, your weight/tolerance etc.
http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/lifestyle/alcohol/

I'm a lightweight and LO woke up almost every 2 hours which is why I hardly ever got any alcohol. :(

Sorry we had a busy night last night

I just wanted to comment and say that we found a lot of success with supplementing starting when Fi was around 4-5 months. on a normal day i'm unable to feed her from 7am-6pm. I pump three times at work and at 10 months get about 8 ounces in total. I send three 4oz bottles (2 Breast milk and one of formula) I try to label the formula since thats treated a little differently than BM if its left over (must use within 24 hours) As far as solids, Fiona gets 2 ounces of formula that the daycare mixes with oatmeal cereal for breakfast and sometimes fruit. The she gets lunch which is mostly BLW veggies, chicken, eggs, yogurt.... pretty much what was left over from dinner the night before. I also leave puffs and yogurt drops for snacks. At home she eats dinner with us and breastfeeds on demand once or twice before bed. In the last month we sleep trained and she will usually wake up around 4 to eat and then we cosleep and she nurses until about 6:30.

You can try upping her meals to 3 instead of 2 so she'll need less during the day
I use more milk plus when i see my supply dip you can find it at whole foods
the nursing support teas help too, added bonus is that is helps up your water intake
We use the enfamil gentlease powder and had no problems
Our ped said we can start mixing 1oz of whole cows milk in with 3 oz of formula/BM starting at 11 months

Just commiseration here I pumped today and got 6.33 oz so yea after a full week of nursing on demand I'd have guessed it would be high instead of low but oh well

I know she's not 11 months yet but that's what the chart on kellymom has and it says:

11-16 mo	–	550 ml (50% of total energy intake)	19 oz	Dewey 1984
11-16 mo	502 +/- 34 g	487 ml (32% of total energy intake)	16.5 oz	Onyango 2002

So I guess 6 at daycare makes sense because he's still feeding at home 3-5 times :bummed:

I was so completely stressed out about production that when we started supplementing around 6 months, I actually felt better (which I wasn't expecting). I didn't want to and I was putting so much pressure on myself to produce that it just made everything harder.

We mixed formula with breastmilk for her bottles. She usually drank them all, so I wasn't worried about wasting.

My DD is 9.5 months and my supply has tanked due to getting knocked up. Luckily I have a good freezer stash, but not enough to make it to the year mark with what I am pumping. I talked to her pediatrician about supplementing with WCM in a month or so and she was fine with it. She said the real concern is with giving a lot of WCM at once (18 oz a day or more), but at least for me, DD is only drinking 6-9 oz a day at daycare so making half of that WCM should not be an issue.

If you are comfortable adding in WCM, it might make sense to start that transition instead of formula since you are so close to the one year mark!

I hope you get it figured out! Maybe giving her formula will be a little relief off of your shoulders so you aren't worrying about production all of the time.

@avivoca: I had to start supplementing at 7 months. When my period came back my supply tanked and never recovered. I felt the same way you did. Hopefully your supply will pop back up, but if it doesn't I just wanted to let you know my daughter has been thriving and I have no regrets about supplementing. It actually makes it much easier for my husband to be more involved because he can give her a bottle sometimes and he's not stressed about depleting the freezer stash. It just takes the pressure off. I actually made MORE milk pumping after I started supplementing because I wasn't so stressed about getting enough ounces out of each pump.

As for formula, we tried a few and ended up doing the generic Target version of Similac Sensitive. She had some spit up issues with some other kinds of formula but that one has been ok. Our pediatrician's office had a bunch of samples they gave us to try out.

When I was sending breastmilk and formula to daycare, I would just send complete bottles (actually I sent frozen bags but same idea) of breastmilk and then make up any needed extra bottles with a complete bottle of formula. Our daycare provider seemed unsure about how to do a part breastmilk, part formula bottle and I wanted it to be as smooth of a process as possible.

Good luck! You'll be fine

@avivoca: Good luck with the lactation cookies, and I'm sorry you are going through this! I had to start supplementing my very hungry baby at 7 mos and tried not to beat myself up too hard about it - once they get solid foods there is really not much difference between breast milk and formula, although your LO will still get all the awesome benefits of BM! I did a ton of research on which formula and went with it and don't let myself dwell on it. We use Baby's Only which is a bit more expensive but I am more comfortable with it. I would just send a can with LO to daycare.

Hugs. How old is she?

I got pregnant when my LO was 9mos and I dried up within weeks. I used my stash but that only got us through so much. When she was close to 11mos my pedi was comfortable with us offering her some almond milk or whatever we would offer her after 12 months instead of doing formula. She did tell me to put her on several different vitamins and make sure she was eating a well balanced diet. Turned out she didn't like ANY MILK! LOL...but we started watering down almond milk and she took it without a problem. I hope your supply comes back up soon!

Can you try a Medela Symphony? They are seriously the best.

Also, maybe ask your ped about adding an ounce or two of cows or goats milk to bottles instead of supplementing?

But you know we supplement so I am not against formula at all! I would send one extra bottle of formula rather than adding it to breastmilk, in case she doesn't finish bottles or doesn't need it. At her age I think she will probably do just fine with any kind of formula, especially if she's enjoyed a variety of foods including dairy with no issues.
