At a little over 2 years, we got a twin mattress and bed frame (we cut the legs off so it sits very close to the floor). He never appreciated the crib and it made bedtime/wake-ups much easier on us (and my back!) We did it as the incentive to finally break the nighttime pacifier habit and it worked! We moved him to a mattress on the floor that day, and bought him an IKEA bunk bed by the following week. That was 4 mos ago and he still doesn't get out of his bed himself usually, he just waits till we come in. We were lucky that we made it that long! We took the front of his crib off and converted it into a toddler bed. We'll be moving him to a different room this summer to make way for LO #2. Honestly I'm glad because it hasn't changed anything, she still treats it like a crib and doesn't get out unless we come to get her! She loved it, so when we got home, we converted her crib with the toddler rail.
