@bluestriped bee: I was having that problem for a while as well when I tried to increase from 1500 to 2000. It took me a really long time to get up to 2000 but my doctor told me that I really needed to if I wanted to get the most benefit. Do you take it right after eating? That's the only way I can take it without getting sick (even now, almost 3 years later).

Update: I take 1000 mg at night. I tried upping to 1500 mg early on but I was so nauseous that I was dry heaving all day. My dr said its fine to stay at 1000.

@BrentLee88: I've been taking metformin throughout my whole pregnancy, but like I said after a few weeks on it the side effects went away completely so it hasn't bothered me.

@pui: I take 1500 a day one for breakfast, lunch and dinner, i have gotten diarrhea if i don't eat with it, i also get nausea. i believe you do stop taking it when you are preggers, but as you take it more the side effects go away.

@MaryM: oh, good to know. Thanks! I'm on the lowest dose (500 mg) and will increase it once a week.

It was funny getting the prescription, they come in huge bottles! Never seen them that big before.

When I increased the dose I'd get nausea in the evenings and didn't have much of an appetite.

Now if I go too carb crazy...the carbs want to get out of my body asap. If you know what I mean...

But it hasn't been anything that impacted my day to day life, so overall I've found it incredibly worth it.

@bluestriped bee: I didn't have any GI side effects until I started upping my dose. I'm on the extended release (ER) version, so my OBGYN said it didn't matter if I took it all at once or split up the pills throughout the day. I take 1,000-1,500 (if I remember the third pill), and haven't had awful side effects. I only really get them if I go WAY overboard on carbs.

I just want to update that I did end up on Metformin. I take 1000mg in two doses a day (morning and evening). I did have some bad side effects for the first week (nausea mostly) but it gradually went away and now the pills don't upset me at all.

@bluestriped bee: I was only on 500 mg the whole time I was on it and didn't have any problems. My Dr. instructed me to take it with dinner and make sure to have a substantial dinner. That seemed to work for me.

Now that I've been diagnosed with PCOS and DOR, I'm starting metformin tonight!

Starting with 500 mg for the first week, then 1000 mg the second week, then 1500 mg the 3rd week. I'll be monitored I believe and my RE will adjust the dose as needed.

So any side effects, I should be worried about?

I am on 2000mg per day. I take 1000 in the morning and 1000 at night. My GP started me off on 1500mg, but my RE felt that wasn't enough and increased it to 2000mg. He said he had seen very little success in women with PCOS and IR on less than 2000mg. If IR isn't too much of an issue, a lower dose might not be an issue though.

I was on 1500 mg and I took it after breakfast, lunch and dinner. I took it for 6 weeks while ttc and weaned off of it when I was 12 weeks pregnant. I really think the metformin combined with a low glycemic index diet helped me get pregnant. The low glycemic index diet also helped with the side effects from the metformin.

I was taking 1000 once per day (500 in the am, 500 in the pm). My OB took me off at about 6 months, but I would ask your doctor what they would recommend on going off metformin.

@swedishfish: My RE just wanted me to go ahead with treatment to get me pregnant and not really treat the PCOS at all. We'll hopefully be doing Clomid, Ovidrel, timed intercourse and Progesterone supplements in January. He said that because of the side effects that come with Metformin, I didn't have to bother taking it.

A few weeks later, my GP looked at my numbers and said I should definitely be on Metformin and gave me the prescription.

I started with 1500 mg/day and my RE advised me to continue during pregnancy. My endocrinologist upped it to 2500 mg/day due to my GD. I am now taking 2000 mg/day on the advice of my endocrinologist.
