@daniellemybelle: Our hospital doesn't actually have their own class so I looked at their recommendation and decided to go with another location that was closer, cheaper, and more convenient for us, schedule-wise.

I'm also taking a prenatal yoga class and that has been great to practice breathing techniques and some birthing positions but I wouldn't have felt it was enough to not take the birth classes too.

I took the hospital class but it didn't really help us since I ended up with a c-section anyway.

@daniellemybelle: My OB recommended the class we took based on her knowledge of the type of birth I was hoping for. The techniques were helpful to me (and my husband) since I labored at home for the majority of my labor. We didn't have someone else to coach/suggest things to us so we tried a variety of techniques until something worked.

@daniellemybelle: The doula class also covered some newborn care and breastfeeding, while hypno didn't. Also just lots of random relaxation exercises, couples bonding advice and whatnot. We thought we would end up using that doula, which is why we took the course, but she couldn't make it to the birth in the end (I was in denial about labor and didn't give enough lead time!!)

Hypno had more information about physiology (and birth videos!!) which the doula's class didn't. And obviously the whole hypnobirthing technique is something that was covered very in depth.

Hypno was only 4 or 6 sessions and the other one was like 10! I think we may have overprepared a bit, but it was kind of fun :D

It seems like there were a lot of you that took the hospital class! Glad to hear that they were so helpful. It definitely sounds like hospital classes are great for getting familiar with their policies. Those of you who have already had your LO - Did you feel like the techniques you learned in class helped you in labor? Were you able to avoid interventions, if that was a goal?

@Orvis18: @pelikila: That's pretty cool! In my area there are a lot of those type of classes. How did you decide to take the one you chose?

@yoursilverlining: I thought I'd include yoga because I had heard some women choose it as a way to prepare themselves physically and mentally for birth, rather than a traditional birth class. I've also heard that some prenatal yoga classes do go over coping techniques specific to labor, but I'm sure it varies.

@sloaneandpuffy: Very interesting! How did they differ?

I couldn't vote for two, but did take two classes... Hypnobirthing and another class held by a doula. I enjoyed both and felt like although sometimes they covered the same territory, each had its special aspects.

We did the childbirth class offered through the hospital. Lots of good general information and it seemed they borrowed from a lot of the methods out there and provided information on where to go if you wanted more information on a specific method.
I really need to review the materials we received from class to refresh my memory on the coping techniques, now that we're counting days, not weeks, until the due date (14!).

I took prenatal yoga classes, but I’m not sure if you mean a yoga class specifically geared towards labor and birth? My prenatal yoga classes are general yoga, and of course, you can also do the moves during labor to center you and relax you – but they are not specifically about laboring or birth.
I’m not taking any other birth courses.

I voted other. We did a one day class focused on a variety of different med-free focused coping methods rather than one particular style.

We just completed our hospital class. It was definitely worth it to take. Here are the important things we got out of it:

1. Hospital policies (ie: they don't have a nursery, everyone rooms-in with their babies. The babies don't leave Mom or Dad's sight unless there is an emergency. Babies aren't allowed out of the birth/recovery area until discharged. They only push for c-section if there are complications and they allow you to push during labor in your comfortable position).

2. What occurs during labor and delivery. I didn't feel like reading a bunch of books to figure this out and do better with someone describing it to us.

We're taking a natural child birth class that isn't affiliated with a hospital or one specific method. We're halfway through and I really love it so far.

I took the hospital childbirth class. I liked it, I knew I wanted an epidural coming in and they went over that, natural, and other meds that you can take that ease the pain a little bit. I think it helped me feel more comfortable with my decision, and I felt like they weren't biased at all to one thing and said the positives and negatives to them all. Plus, we split into groups of boys and girls and got to come up with a big list of questions for the teacher to answer.

I voted Lamaze, but am thinking I should have voted Hospital. Technically it was based on Lamaze... but I feel that portion of it was a little watered down. It was inexpensive, I didn't take a great deal from it that I hadn't already learned, but it was totally worth it for DH and to ask questions about our hospital's specific policies (like eating, IVs etc)
