@Rockies11:  My heart breaks while reading that. I'm so sorry. You know I've had HG in the past. That sounds absolutely terrible. :(

I'd ask about alternative options, like jelly beans if you think that would be better. The drink isn't horrible but it's not great if you aren't feeling well, let alone have HG!

@babycanuck: I have had two HG pregnancies, and have puked both times during the one hour, fully medicated, and proteined, etc. The first time I had to redrink it because I puked right away, and I cried and redrank and cried and cried, but managed to keep it down that time. The second time I puked like 45 minutes into it? They said enough time had passed that I didn't need to redrink. My advice is to take it a minute at a time, and try to hold off puking for as long as you possibly can. The other possibility I have heard of from American ladies is that they were allowed to eat a bunch of jellybeans instead of drink, which seemed more doable than drinking something that gave me the barfs thinking about. I asked about that, and they thought I was crazy, so I don't think that it's a Canadian thing. I personally wouldn't be comfortable declining the test, and didn't decline it with HG, no risk factors, and a previous bad experience, just because uncontrolled GD is so serious for the baby.

@QBbride: I had HG and ended up having GD as well. If I hadn't done the test I never would have known - it ended up that baby needed to come out early and it would have been a dangerous situation to let me go too close to my due date because of problems caused by the GD. Problems that they never would have checked for if it wasn't for the GD diagnosis. I would definitely not recommend skipping it just because it might make you throw up.

@babycanuck: I had pretty severe HG and I didn't get sick from the one hour test, but I did from the three hour. Fortunately it didn't happen until like 1.5 hours into it, so they were still able to go forward with the test...but I had already failed it anyways, so it didn't matter much. If you do end up being unable to take the test you might want to consider checking your blood sugar like an hour after meals for a few days - that is another good way to gauge whether or not you have GD.

No-- well, I didn't vomit. I did feel terrible the rest of the day and have a migraine from the sugar rush, but I anticipated much worse. Drink it COLD, and try to get it over with first thing in the AM.

I asked my midwife about declining the GD test as I had no risk factors and she just about fell off her chair. I decided I should do it, and turns out I actually have GD so lucky I did. They do the 3 hour test fairly routinely in Australia so that's the one I did, and you can't eat or drink during that time as it can affect your results. I took Zofran prior to drinking the sugary drink and had a book with me as a distraction and while I felt pretty yucky and nearly spewed a couple of times, I got through it and didn't. They told me if I was sick, I would have to repeat the test as that obviously can affect the results too. Do whatever you can to make yourself more comfortable- if that means taking your mum, do it for sure! Good luck x

@babycanuck: honestly, if I had HG I just would decline the GD test. I could barely do it and I didn't have HG. Every test is optional.

@babycanuck: I had HG with both of my boys. The testing was the pits both times for me. I failed the one hour test with both boys and passed the 3 hour with both of them. I made sure I had ICE cold water to sip after the yucky drink. I also made sure that I had my Zofran with me. I slept a lot after both 3 hour tests. After all the tests I went and got food with lots of protein to try and balance my sugar back out.

Thanks everyone

They did tell me I could eat as long as I watch my sugar intake...aka no Oreos for breakfast!!

Hopefully it will be easier than I think - I asked my mother to come with because I'm so paranoid!

I was terrified about this with my first pregnancy but I was fine.
This time I didn't do the test actually, my doctor did a finger tip prick to test my blood sugar. She said if it was high then we'd do the GD test and if it was normal we would skip it. If you are really worried maybe that is an option?

Would your Dr allow you to do an alternate option? I know some people's dr's allow a big pancake breakfast or OJ instead of that drink...

I've had two kids and have had to take the 1-hour and 3-hour glucose tests for both. (I was diagnosed with GD with LO1 so I had to take the GD 3-hr with LO2) I was initially worried about drinking it in 5 minutes but when I got there it's not like they were chanting "chug, chug, chug" to get me to do it under 5 minutes. It was a small amount of liquid, maybe 8-10 oz and tastes like fruit punch or orange Crush depending upon the color. I had to fast from food and water the night before so I made sure to go to the clinic first thing in the morning to get the test done. Once I drank the liquid they told me I could sip water after waiting 30 minutes. I felt slightly nauseated (I had nausea during both of my pregnancies) but sitting down helped and I just sipped water after the 30-minutes mark. Not all clinics do it this way, but this was my experience. Hope this helps!

ETA: Bring a snack with you to the test so that when you are done you can eat immediately! :silly:

My nausea was significantly improved by the time I did the test but I will say the drink was not nearly as disgusting as I had built it up to be in my mind.

I am a bit worried about getting sick, too. I'm hoping that if I start feeling sick, they'll let me take a sip of water to try to calm my stomach. Or maybe a cracker. Or something. I have no idea the rules of the test. My test is in early August.

Oh, could you ask for or bring a straw? That will help you down it quicker. Also, I heard it's better chilled than room temp. Will you be taking your anti-nausea medication? I would take it if you think you might be sick.

did you get sick from it?

I'm scared out of my MIND about this in two weeks. They said I have five minutes to down the drink. I can barely finish half a glass of apple juice in 5 minutes. The doctor basically said "so if you're sick, you're sick."

Kill me now.
