yes, my work definitely counts weekend travel as a workday - especially with an early flight, and allow for the appropriate comp later

My husband travels a lot for work, and when he travels on a Saturday or Sunday, it's a paid work day. Depending on how long he is gone, he may take a day off during the week once he's back, or just work 6-7 days straight.

In two weeks he is leaving at 5 a.m. on a Sunday, and won't be back for 14 days. Of the 14 days, he'll have just 1 day off, max 2, but one he is back, he'll take an extra week day off to help balance it all out.

Depending on your state, there should be labor laws in place. We are in California.

I work for a company where we bill our time to client projects, so I log my time to whatever client I'm traveling for. I bill from when I arrive at the airport to when I arrive at my destination. Then, depending on how the rest of the week goes, I'll either leave early a couple of days or take a day off depending on how much time I billed on Sunday.

I would definitely ask--Sunday should be your day! :)

If I travel on Saturday or Sunday (or am away working over a weekend) I generally take a comp day for later use.

I hadn't thought about it! I travel on Sunday nights and don't take extra days off because of it?

Absolutely take another day as a day off. My DH's company is horrible about doing this!

Where I work the paid by the hour employees get time and a half for any traveling they do on the weekends (all bankable overtime). The salaried workers just ask their bosses for a compensation day off later on.

We charge our time for travel, no matter when it is. The whole time you are enroute to your destination is chargeable for us. So I might get to take Friday if I had to "work" on a Sunday. It's called a non-standard work week here. Good luck!

Oh I definirely flex it if it's a whole day thing. Unless I'm approved for OT, I don't work for free and I'm unapologetic about it. Never had an issue with it :)

@Mae: @Corduroy: Oh, cool. Thanks. I've taken extended weekends before (& used vacation) to take advantage of the travel but this Sunday I am traveling for work and only work. It's a short trip that came up right before the holidays.

I wasn't sure what was normal in a situation like this. Good to know.

I'll ask my boss when I get back.
Oh, if I take this as a work day, I'll make sure to do work during the flight and/or when I get to my destination.

@mediagirl: oh, man, that sucks.

Yes, I flew on Sunday and I took today as a flex day. It's unofficial and unreported but my boss acknowledges it. Definitely ask.

They don't count it as a work day at my company. They just expect you go use your time to travel if flying on a weekend.

I would DEFINITELY count that a work day if it is Sunday am. If it was an evening flight it's iffy, but you're missing a whole day and night with your family.

Do you 'mark' that day of flying as a work day?

I have to travel for work and my flight is Sunday AM. Wondering how I should make up for that day.

I could do the right thing and ask my boss if I can have an extra vacation day to make up for the Sunday travel.
