I was diagnosed with a condition right out of college that I knew could cause trouble when it came time to conceive. I didn't ovulate on my own whatsoever and was put on a medication to regulate my hormones because the imbalance was unhealthy, not just from a ttc standpoint. I switched to a pregnancy safe version when we started ttc. Without that medication I definitely would not have been able to conceive, but I'm lucky that I found out about it before we started trying, which probably drastically cut down the amount of time we tried (8 months). I still do think that the condition caused problems when we were ttc, because it was only after many medicine adjustments that I finally got my bfp.

I never joined the IF boards because I didn't feel like I had been through enough to join them/didn't meet the official definition. When I got pregnant we were preparing for an iui, at which point I would have probably joined. I frequently read the boards because they were such a source of information. I'm so glad we have such a supportive ttc and IF community here.

Both of my sisters have PCOS and my older sister had tried IUI, IVF, and donor eggs and was unable to get pregnant, so I knew going in that there might be issues and after 6 mo TTC, I went to a RE for evaluation.

I straddle the IF and TTC boards on here. I kind of suspected before we started TTC that we would have issues, after months of charting and using OPKs and never confirming O before we even started officially trying. Even when we were going through 5 unsuccessful Clomid cycles I still didn't label myself as having IF. We're on cycle 11 now of trying (although only at 9 months TTC, due to short cycles / LP defect), but it wasn't until somewhat recently that I felt comfortable posting on the IF boards. I just felt a lot of guilt, like my problems weren't as valid/in need of support as others who have been trying so much longer. But once we started seeing an RE who confirmed I have DOR, LP defect, and who knows what else that makes me not ovulate on my own, and especially after my first IUI + injectables cycle was canceled last month due to not responding to the meds, then I really felt like yes, I definitely have IF.

I was diagnosed with PCOS at 22 and had pretty severe symptoms anytime I wasn't managing it with BCP, so when we started trying at 26, I suspected it might be an issue. When I gained 25 lbs in a month and my period didn't come back at all for four months, I definitely had a feeling that things likely weren't going to be straightforward.
But I think it was leading up to the obligatory year, and I was still having 100+ day annovulatory cycles, that I felt the dread being "labelled" with infertility.

However, we ended up getting pregnant after 19 months with little intervention, so in retrospect, now I don't even know if I "qualify".

@T.H.O.U.: I agree! As a HB IF veteran (if I'm allowed to call myself that, haha) I would not want anyone who is looking for support to feel like they can't turn to the IF check in threads, etc.

Over 14 months, I've had 11 cycles and 1 chemical pregnancy. I have a consultation today to figure out our next steps from here. I don't know when I hit the "this is going to take some time" point. It's been an on and off feeling. And I don't know whether to label myself with IF since I haven't been tested...

Another thing to add along the lines of: @locavore_mama: I agree that I would never label myself as IF especially within a year, but when I came up on that year I had to start wondering. For me, I was happy to have the IF boards here because they are such a great group for questions and support and to help with next steps. I think for me I just wanted to educate myself about next steps just in case we had to go there. Also, those women that have been there year after year are very positive and uplifting.

So, I would highly encourage those feeling discouraged and/or questing IF to stalk/read/join the IF boards even if you aren't ready for that label.

we knew before starting because I went off BC the year we got married (we were still preventing) and didn't have a period for 6 months (at which point I was given provera) and didn't have regular periods after either. ultrasound and test results seemed to point PCOS, though perhaps on the milder side.

initially I was just getting Clomid through a NP and planning to try that for 4 months. and it worked, but then I had my first chemical and we made an appointment with the RE.

second time around my PCOS is much milder and I ovulate at least somewhat on my own, so I thought I might be in the clear, but after my third chemical I went back to the RE.

I somehow found the IF label easier the first time. I guess I believed what the RE said - that going full term might "cure" my hormones - and was crushed when nothing had changed.

I think everyone has the right to label themselves (or not) however they want. I like the IF boards because people all understand the testing and treatments and such, and it's a wonderful group. I can see if you were just trying and having it take a while, you might not feel ready to join there until you started testing etc. but you would be welcome anytime! the board definitely has people all over the map on how long they've been trying, what treatments they have done, etc.

I do think I was comfortable with the IF label because it meant I was getting treatment that might help. I'm a person who always wants to be proactive to fix things, so was ready to jump on the bandwagon as soon as it looked like I should.

I had a gut feeling for no real reason even before we started TTC. In fact, I recently found a little quiz I took during our pre-cana class (Catholic pre-marriage counseling) 5 years ago and one of the questions asked what are your fears, and I said that I wouldn't be able to have kids. Why would I have even thought that?

Anyway, I thought something was wrong after a few months when everything in my charting looked good but I wasn't getting pregnant. I met with the OB/GYN after 6 months and she had me come back at 9 months for hormone testing. That got me put on thyroid medication, but nothing else was wrong.

At 11 months I made an appointment with an RE and had all the diagnostic testing done. All tests were normal, so we started treatment via the usual path.

Clomid alone didn't work, and neither did 4 IUIs or one IVF. I'm starting another IVF round next cycle, but like @bluestriped bee: I'm worried that I've never seen a BFP in all this time (coming up on 2 years).

Up to 12 months is considered normal, so even though I am over 6, I don't currently have a reason to automatically assume there is an underlying problem.

For some reason, this thread rubs me the wrong way. It feels like you are saying that if you don't get pregnant in 6 months, then there must be something wrong.

I could be overly sensitive because even though I don't have a reason to believe there is an issue (I did get one BFP that ended in MC), I am still starting to get increasingly worried at the prospect.

For now, I feel like @locavore_mama described. I don't feel like I have a right to post in a place where so many women are struggling with real issues, and I haven't even had any sort of treatment or testing.

I hope all of us get those BFPs that we so desperately crave soon. Hugs to everyone. ♥

@meganmp: I can totally understand where you are coming from, and you don't have to be ashamed of your feelings. ♥

@bluestriped bee: we tried for twelve cycles before we got out BFP and I pretty much knew I was pregnant because it was the only cycle anything remotely different had happened following O. Prior to our BFP I hadn't had a late period, spotting etc - nothing to indicate a pregnancy at all.

After a full year of TTC I was getting to the point where I was ready to seek some professional advice but I wouldn't have said I "had" infertility.

I'll share my story, after being off BCP for a year before we started actively TTC and then another 6 months of all BFN, I finally asked my Ob/gyn. Because I was young and my DH has a chronic health condition, she suggested that we see a fertility clinic to get a Sperm Analysis done. My RE saw our results and didn't think we would have trouble getting pregnant. Well, the first medicated IUI was a failure and I had a string of cancelled IUIs due to a number of issues. It wasn't until we had our second failed IUI, which was cycle 8 for us, but in the whole TTC timeline, it was month 12. I, also, have been doing fertility accupunture for over a year. That has been helping with stress and getting my body ready.

What also worries me is that I have never seen a BFP. Never been pregnant. I'm wondering if I have a hostile uterus or something. The IUIs should have helped DH's low morphology. But at this point, Drs don't know why we aren't getting pregnant. All my results look normal.

After 3 months I started to worry about male factor based on a preexisting condition I was already aware of. A couple months later two doctors had told us we needed IVF based on test results, and then they told me my situation was actually worse. So for us it wasn't based on time so much as stumbling upon the numbers.

@meganmp: that's exactly it. LO #1 took a year to conceive and while it was hard for us I know it is nothing compared to what some other ladies have and are going through right now. We were/are able to conceive LO without intervention. So I would never claim the IF title because of that.

This is really interesting to me, because from what I've read, when you're infertile, you usually have an underlying issue, such as PCOS or male factor. If you don't, then you're unexplained infertile, correct?

I personally do not care for the labels of fertile or infertile. I don't know what they really define, if that makes sense. We all have factors going into TTCing that could make the process more or less difficult. In my situation, it's age and declining egg quality, as an example.

Even though I knew that something was wrong very early in our TTC process (pain, unsuccessful cycles despite everything going "right"), I didn't start to think of myself as having infertility issues until I had surgery that diagnosed endometriosis and found that both of my tubes were blocked. Before I had a clear answer for our inability to conceive, I was stupidly optimistic... I kept thinking "This will be our month!" Now that we are TTC #2, I feel like I fit into the "infertile" category even though we have just started trying because I know going in that we have issues that may make conceiving difficult. I don't post on the IF/6+ month boards though because I don't feel like I fit in there yet... Technically everything looks good for TTC right now, so even though I bear all the emotional scars of infertility, I haven't walked the miles yet this time around.

I just want to give everyone in this group a huge (hug) and let you know that I am hoping that each of you finds answers and a sticky baby soon. I remember so clearly how it felt every day I struggled to get pregnant with DD, so my heart goes out to everyone here. You are not alone.

It took me 12 months to have a sticky pregnancy (well sticking so far at 18 weeks).

That included: 3 cycles to get pregnant, miscarriage at 8 weeks, 3 months to get my period back, then 4 more cycles including a possible early chemical pregnancy before sticky pregnancy.

I didn't want to post on the IF, that wasn't a label or reality I was ready to place on myself. When I got pregnant in November, I would have been ready to move to that board if I'd made it to the new year without a successful pregnancy or had a second miscarriage. Even though I have long cycles, I still didn't feel like I needed interventions to get pregnant. Even though it took a year, I didn't feel like I could relate to the IF board because I wasn't doing anything different or taking new steps to get pregnant, but I couldn't relate to "newbies" on TTC boards.

I started posting about possible secondary IF after our second miscarriage and length of time conceiving a second child. In the end it was about a 13 month journey but I really appreciated the support I got from the IF group after my second MC.

Firstly came the week of smiley faced OPKs starting at CD 4 month 2. Then, a month of bleeding, which came at month 6. Well, that's when my suspicions were confirmed, anyway. I had a vibe after the first month, but not for any reason. Turns out I was right, and I needed IVF to get pregnant.

@locavore_mama: Your comment really makes me feel warm and fuzzy, and I appreciate it. I don't know why it irks me to hear women who did try for a while (I'm thinking 8 months), but were totally within the normal range for average time to conception and get pregnant without any interventions at all say that they have IF. I have NO RIGHT to be annoyed, but I get that way (I say this while hanging my head in shame).

I knew I had ovulation issues before TTC so I only waited 3 months before calling the OBGYN. DH was tested and he had issues as well. I met with my RE 4 months into TTC. It was the right decision for us.

I had some reservations before TTC due to some health issues I had a few years earlier. So around the 6 month mark I really got more concerned, we had been NTNP for 6 months before that but didn't think anything of those months. I casually mentioned it to my doctor at my annual and he sent me for testing right away because he felt there was enough medical history to be worried.

I started to get suspicious at 9 months. During that cycle DH and I had some tests done which confirmed it.

I had really long (45-65 day) cycles, so by 6 months out (only 4 cycles) I knew something was wrong and scheduled an appointment. By 9 months my OB had me on Clomid...and I think it only took that long because I had to see my family doctor, then tried another OB before I eventually found the one I stuck with. If I had found her first I probably would have started Clomid at 6 months out, once they ruled out other causes (PCOS, issues with dh)
