@Ali: Nope - which is great, because I got the monitor so I'd have more notice of impending O than the OPK gives me (I just took it like 10 mins ago, so funny timing you just asked!). I was actually relieved it was negative (for the first time ever) because we haven't BDd in a few days and were relying on the monitor to tell us when to start, which it seems was successful. I am bringing more OPKs on vacation so will use them in the evenings and expect a positive by Sunday or so.

Yes, you can totally miss it. Most suggest testing in the afternoon...I guess surges are most common then? I only tried for one month and gave up because my temps showed me I ovulated, but I never got a surge.

@Ali: I totally agree. And I'm a control freak too. As a perfectionist and eager beaver, it's very hard to have something in my life I want more than anything and am unable to do much about if I am able to have it or not. I think that's the hardest part for people like us.

@Ambular1o25: Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I'm giving us 4 months and if it hasn't happened I'm going to buy myself an all singing all dancing fertility monitor for Christmas!

In all honesty, the charting is just to give me "something to do" - it's so frustrating not being able to "do" something to help the process along! I'm such a control freak! I'm also thinking that, should we find we're not able to conceive, I'll be one step ahead of the game taking reams of information to the doctor!!

@Ali: Coming off BCP totally wrecked havoc on my cycle. For the first two months we just used cheap OPK's without charting and the first month I didn't get a positive OPK, the second I did, and the third was iffy. I only tested once a day, but it always seemed difficult for me to really tell if one pink line was darker. I think only one ever seemed super clear. I highly recommend charting with an OPK for at least two months (because the first just ends up being a reference really) and if that doesn't work, you can cheat like me and @jojogirl and get a fertility monitor. It has proven to be much more helpful to me and you get a clear answer of High and Peak times for ovulation. But seeing as how you're just starting, I'd skip the $200 investment until you've gotten a few BFN's. Many women are pregnant in their first or second time trying without doing anything at all. It just wasn't me, lol.

@Ali: OH trust me i know!! Every month my DH makes me feel better about ttc saying "we're on a learning curve... we do better at this every month". :) Part of me wishes I'd educated myself better BEFORE ttc, but i was trying not to get too caught up in all of it. But yes, amazing how complicated it all is.

@Ali: Temps can be SO wonky. One high temp isn't unusual (if you look at my chart from last month on the charting thread, I had multiple random high temps throughout the month, then FINALLY a sustained thermal shift on the same day as my positive OPK). I think once you see the shift it'll be more clear you Od! I hope!

I'm one of those rare people who has to test in the morning! My pattern is I'll see an almost positive OPK one morning, still almost positive that afternoon/evening, a positive OPK if I use FMU the next, but negative any other time that day. So my surge is pretty short but I also get some kind of fade-in and can guess which day it's going to be. And even though I know this will happen I still just use the cheapies twice a day.

Considering it's your first cycle off BCP, it's possible your body might make multiple attempts to O? So if you don't see several high temps, keep at it!

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I had no idea the time of day makes a difference - I'm going to start testing every day at 2pm, on my lunch break at work!!

@Mrs Cb - yes, I've got a BBT thermometer. It's not 35.8 on the dot every day but it rounds up or down to that every time....

I've just done another test and it was stark white! Hmm, very confusing! I'm not worried, I mean, we BDd yesterday and I'm not desperate for my BFP this month (of course it would be nice!!) ... I suppose the test will be whether my temp stays up....

Right, I'm testing twice a day from now on!!!

I tested twice a day my first cycle off BC 1) So I would know when around I was ovulating 2) I wanted to make sure when I would get the surge. They tell you do in the afternoon, but some get them in the morning only.

I read a while ago that LH surges might not last 24 hours. So if you only test at 8 a.m. and your surge goes from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., you would have missed it.

Also, are you using a basal thermometer? I think most people see some sort of fluctuations in their temperatures every day.

@Ali: like @JoJoGirl said, I use the cheapies, once a day when I get home from work (around 6pm) and they get darker and darker until eventually it's positive, and then usually after one more day of positive, it's stark white again. But I only ever test once a day. No harm in testing morning and evening though, other than the extra cost. See what your temp does tomorrow, then it'll be clearer (hopefully!)

I used the cheapies and I think it is best to test 2x a day. I had a negative at 9pm and then a positive at 7am the next day and by 3pm that same day, it was negative again. So it is possible to miss it if you are only testing every 24 hrs.

I know some people do test 2x/day (12 hrs apart, like 8am and 8pm). I only test 1x/day and have always gotten a positive (using digitals) - however, a lot of places recommend testing in the afternoon, not the morning. Apparently your LH surges first thing in the morning and it takes around 4 hrs for it to get into your urine. From a LOT of research I've done about OPK timing (this is why I got the monitor...), they say between noon and 8pm is the best window, and 2pm is the peak time for testing. I know there are ladies on here who get + opks in the morning no problem, but just FYI.

Also you may not O til later, so I'd say keep using the OPKs and temping and wait to see what your temps do.. since this is your first month charting, you have no previous patterns to go on so just keep it up! And keep in mind some people see a temp drop on O day or O-1, so the rise on its own might not indicate you missed it. :)

Also I've never used the cheapies, but I think I've heard people say they see the lines get darker and darker until it's positive, and then the next day it's stark white again? I'm not sure about that, but if there's a faint test line, you're probably still gearing up to O!

When I was using OPKs, I tested a few times a day around the time I thought I would ovulate. I think it's possible but unlikely that you'd miss it in a 24 hour period...The line SHOULD be at least a little darker at some point, I think.

I'm so confused!!! I'm two weeks into my first ever cycle off BCP and I've been charting, using a free app on my phone.

Every morning, I take my temperature and every morning it's the same - 35.8 celcius. I started using cheapie OPK test strips around CD 6, fully aware that I'd probably not O on CD 14 and fully prepared to temp and test every day until something happened.

Yesterday was CD14. At 9am, I got a faint test line on my OPK. I know that's a negative test but it was interesting because I only usually get the control line.....

This morning, at 9.30am, I got another negative OPK (with a faint test line) but my temperature had randomly shot up to 36.4 C.

For info - I've had no CM at all for the last two weeks, since stopping my BCP.....!

My question - could I have missed O??! I know a positive OPK means you will O some time between 12 and 36 hours away. Could I have had my LH surge AND Od in the 24 hours between 9am Sunday and 9.30am Monday?!!

Does anyone here test every 12 hours..... (or would this make me crazy?!!).

I'm fairly chilled about the whole getting pregnant thing - I don't expect a BFP on my first cycle off BCP (and I know it takes a while for your cycles to come back to normal) - but I'm trying to get the hang of this charting thing and it's just so confusing!

Thanks charters!
