I use the temporal thermometer on my 11 month old, and if it gives me a high reading I use the rectal for confirmation.

We've been using the ear thermometer since he was around 12 months. We stopped using the rectal at 6 months and just did under the arm.

@mamimami: @Mrsbells: @looch: Yeah we just use our normal thermometer for everryyy location (with probe covers!) My mom always added 1 degree for underarm temps taken with a normal thermometer.

@mamimami: Thanks for the tip. Next time I am at the pharmacy, I will pick one up, we have only the two ear and the one forehead scanner at the moment.

@looch: You can use any thermometer under the arm. Just keep in mind the temps are slightly different. If you google it I'm sure you will find what's considered a "fever" under the arm.

@Mrsbells: I measured my husband's temperature yesterday because he was complaining he was feeling feverish and it registered at 101.4. He felt very warm to me, so I would say it's as accurate as you can expect. I wish I had an old fashioned under the tounge one to compare!

I really would like the one they use in the doctor's office, they measure under the armpit, but I don't know where to begin to look for that.

I bought an ear thermometer at the same age thinking the same thing, but found that when my toddler is sick and cranky he won't cooperate with the ear thermometer as he can turn away, etc and I never get an accurate reading. At 2.5 we are still using the rectal thermometer! He does think the ear thermometer is an awesome toy though!

Thanks everyone.

@looch: Is the forehead one accurate?

@edelweiss: The vicks rectal has a really short probe so its not bad using it and its super fast. I think in the newborn stage the rectal was the only one that gave an accurate reading and just touching was too uncertain for me

I got one from CVS that has attachments for rectal, underarm and mouth. I think I started using the underarm one more for my son around age 2? Honestly, as I've become more experienced as a mama I've taken temperatures less and less. My 12 month old had a fever problem on and off for a week or so and when I took her to see the pedi and she asked me what her temperature had been... **blank look** I just know by touch more or less when they're normal, hot or super hot.

I'm curious about this too. LO is 14 months old and hates the changing table let alone anything doing with his butt. I guess I'll wait awhile to get an ear one.

i don't have advice, but i think reason #1 that we haven't taken LO's temperature more often is because i don't like using the rectal thermometer. we do more of a "does he feel hot to you? really hot or just a little warm?" kind of test.

It was a sad day when we realized both the rectal thermometer and paracetemol suppositories were not going to be used any more. I think it was about 24 months when we had to accept they were over.

We use either an ear or the one where you slide it over the forehead.

At what age did you switch? And which kind did you switch to? LO is 18m old and I think she is outgrowing the vicks rectal thermometer that we have. I wonder which is best, an ear thermometer? Thats what her pediatrician uses..
