I wanna come back and say that when we are visiting our families, it really IS kind of a vacation for us. All of our parents like sending me and DH out for date nights and keeping LO--my mom lives in a housing development that has multiple pools, tennis courts, movie theater, and playground. And my sister and niece live there too, so I have lots of babysitting. DH's family lives in the suburbs of Toronto, so there's always fun stuff to do there as well--and his parents live in a building with an indoor and outdoor pool, squash courts, hot tub, sauna, gym.

So we take advantage of all that stuff when we go! And we have our own rooms in both parents' houses when we go.

We typically use our time off to visit family since we live about 8 hours from both sets of grandparents. DH and I usually take a night or two away by ourselves during these trips, but we've yet to take a family vacation just the three of us.

During our last visit to my inlaws, DH and I both got Strep throat. This was during a heat wave with no AC. And we were sharing a room with DS, who does NOT sleep when we are in the room. It was pure misery.

Over the last year almost all of our trips have involved family. This isn't normally the case. This year our big trip will combine a family visit along with actual exploring. I'm really looking forward to a trip that is just the 4 of us.

No LO yet but all our family is out of state. We make a point not to use all our vacation days visiting family. I guess it's selfish, but I like to travel! And family can come visit us too, we don't always need to go to them. We do take vacations with our families sometimes. Last year we went to Alaska with DH's mom and a couple years ago to Disney World with my dad. We have a trip planned with my mom for 2017. I don't plan on that changing once we have a LO, I think we'll just be traveling less in general. Also if we are able to move closer we'll be an hour away from each of our moms and will be able to see them way more.

We usually go on vacations for ourselves and if family wants to join, great. Or we combo it, extended family first week and hop to a nearby vacation spot with just us, right after.

Yes. We visit the US for Christmas every other year (to visit my family) and spend the alternate years here in the UK with DH's family. For the years we're going to the States, we only do small weekend getaways and one family holiday for 7-10 days (ETA: this holiday is separate from our trip to visit family) as travelling at Christmas eats up a huge chunk of our annual travel fund. For the years we stay in the UK for Christmas, we are planning either one big holiday for 2-3 weeks, plus our usual weekend getaways, or two separate family holidays of 7-10 days each.

That's our plan - it was somewhat modified when we were living in Australia but now that we're back in the UK, we're back on track. :-)

Growing up we had family vacations and separately visited family. Given the amount of time off we have I have a feeling we will do the same when we have kids even though we would need to visit 4 different places to see all of the grandparents l.

Definitely! But our families are a car drive away and we visit them every few months so it's possible for us. If we had to fly to visit family, then we probably need to re-evaluate since flights are $$; and we don't live near either family!

We go on family vacations with D's side of the family. Normally it's a beach trip, but this summer we're renting a lake house in New York. Sometimes I think it would be nice to go somewhere just as our little family, but I really really love my ILs, and we always have a blast...I think we all have more fun being together.

But hopefully as I accrue more vacation time D and I can take some time away alone

@blackbird: That's exactly how I feel about it. My DH keeps calling it "vacation." He's gotten a few side eyes from me for that. We really haven't done a true vacation in a few years.

We live within a few hours of our families so we see them for birthdays, major holidays, and the occasional long weekend. We schedule two week-long vacations as a family each year. I hope as the kids get a bit older we will be able to plan a mini vacation for just DH and I yearly too.

Yes we do. Where we have an issue is scheduling something when we go abroad to visit my inlaws. We stay for 2 weeks and are pretty much housebound. I would love to schedule a few days at a resort or something, but my husband feels guilty for keeping our son away from his grandparents. I suppose we could do something with them, but we're LAZY!

Our family lives just three hours upstate so we only visit them for a weekend. Our only vacations as kids was visiting grandparents in north Carolina and I hated it. I'm hoping we can travel much more with our LO(s).

Yes, we visit family in the UK once a year, but we use that as a springboard to go somewhere else that's easier to get to from there. We also take a week-long trip in the spring (just us), and last year we went on a couple shorter trips. Happily my parents in the US visit us relatively often, and we only visit them on weekends (maybe taking an extra day), so that doesn't use up vacation time.

The majority of our time off is spend visiting our families, but we do schedule mini trips with just us 3 or with just me and DH.

So far this year, we've done a long weekend in Baltimore as a family, then DH and I have done a weekend in Dallas sans LO for a friends' wedding, and we have a 4 day weekend planned in DR in May without LO.

But yeah--all the major holidays are spent in either Toronto or Atlanta with our fams.

We pretty much use all of our vacation time visiting family. I didn't realize how much I valued a vacation with just Mrs. Bee and the kids until we scheduled one this week... and now I'm looking forward to it! I rarely look forward to traveling, so it was a real eye opener. We'll try and make time for more time away with just the kids, outside of the usual visits to family!
