I encourage him to set up plans with his friends for a round of golf or have him go out to do whatever he chooses. He's into both tech and golf so he appreciates time out to check out new products or clubs. For his bday, i told him to pick out a new putter. He's also into sci fi (haha i make him sound so nerdy) so I got tix for us to go to a Star Trek convention - something we otherwise would never have done. It was given by Whole Foods and we learned to make four courses under the direction of their chef. He loved the experience so much he said he nearly proposed on the spot! (This was just weeks before he proposed). I would suggest definitely something experiential that you can do together.
