@Rainbow Sprinkles: oh honey- I know. Mine said the same about me and it was a HUGE fight. I went anyway. I figured we were going to fight about it either way, so might as we'll see if the IBCLC had any ideas. It made a world of difference to have an answer and a plan, and DH did apologize. You know I'm here for you and love you

I plan on going dairy-free & gluten-free when the baby arrives.

As far as substitutes ... Almond milk is wonderful. You can make cheese from cashews. The 'fake' cheeses are okay these days.

Here are a few of my favorite dairy free blogs:
http://ohsheglows.com/
http://www.healthytippingpoint.com/ (she actually eats dairy now, but didn't while BFing).
http://www.veganricha.com/

We don't do many substitutes, but sometimes, I really just want lasagna (I'll make a cashew ricotta). Comfort food! I'm a vegetarian, too, which makes it a bit more challenging. UGH.

So yeah, I'd say, just try sticking with whole foods (maybe a paleo kind of diet). As far as places to shop, our Fred Meyer (like Kroger) has a huge natural foods section with lots of options. Trader Joes is just okay, and Whole Foods has tons.

Good luck!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: why don't you start cutting major dairy and see if it helps?

M was a crier non stop from the beginning and nothing I did help. She wasn't spitting up so we were able to eliminate reflux. I cut all gassy (coffee, cabbage, broccoli, etc) foods and that seemed to help for a while. When I finally cut major dairy items we saw immediate results and a completely different baby within 10 days.

I really didn't change my diet much because we cook from scratch. Rather I abstain from things with dairy. ie I drank almond milk, no ice cream, no cheese, no pizza (sob), etc

@Rainbow Sprinkles: she was spitting up like crazy right away, but was never a screamer and just nursed all day and night. She was gaining weight, too but was VERY lanky/skinny. The only thing that made me eventually think MSPI was the blood in thh stool.

I really hope things will settle for M. Can you go see the LCD erinpye suggested?

@grizz: (@Rainbow Sprinkles): I did watch her as she cried and thought I saw a tongue restricted, and notice a lot of similar symptoms to how S was, but I'm not a doc or IBCLC, so it's so hard to know for sure. I gave my lovely friend my diagnosing IBCLC's info, so she knows she can see her if she feels like she would like to have sweet M assessed.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: You should definitely get that checked out. We didn't have any latching or nursing problems so that wasn't a concern for us. Unfortunately it is so hard at this age (and even as they get older). My son is 2 1/2 now and still can't/won't/doesn't tell us there are problems. He has an ear infection and he said his ear hurt 3 times in the last 3 days. He will have other issues that I know would put most people flat on their backs and he won't even grimace.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I didn't eat cheese substitutes because I didn't like them but the daiya cheese is soy free as well. My 13 mo old still can't have dairy and I give him the daiya cheese. We also do coconut milk yogurt and hemp milk for him ( I use almod milk for me).

DS would nurse constantly, had reflux, terrible gas and eczema. DH actually gave him a bite of chocolate with dairy yesterday and this morning we had an eczema outbreak and he's had gas all day.

I'm really hoping he grows out of it...

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Mine never spit up and gained weight until about 4 months old when he started gaining but falling off the growth chart. He never refused the breast in fact he overfed I believe. He was constantly eating.

This sounds a lot like my LO's MSPI. Big spit up, crying in pain, started at 3 weeks. I suspect that his intolerance to soy is much worse because he reacts to trace amounts of soy lecithin, soybean oil, etc. That said, I don't really do substitutes. We do a real food diet.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: It is so hard to figure out really. But he constantly seemed to be in pain. He screamed and screamed for 15 hours straight every day. It is common to be intolerant to both soy and milk (thus MSPI) because the soy protein is so similar to the milk protein.

We got a reflux diagnosis at 7 days old. We did the exam as well BUT he didn't have mechanical reflux. Ultimately, it seemed that the prilosec (what he had to do because zantac didn't work) was ultimately making it worse.

As I said, I did a total elimination diet for 2 weeks and his symptoms got so much better, that we knew it had to be food. So we slowly introduced new foods watching his reactions. It is really hard but it is so worth it.

Now at 2 1/2 years old he is back on a weight curve and doing so well.

With P, she spit up like crazy, nursed constantly, had very explosive poop and eventually had blood in her stool. This was not until 4 months that I went dairy free and then soy and dairy free for 2 weeks, 6 weeks later.

For me, I ate the same thing pretty much everyday. Either a fried egg sandwich on a kosher pareve onion bagel (which from what I read means no dairy), or scrambled eggs with salsa for breakfast. Lunch was usually a smoothie with coconut milk, a frozen banana, frozen strawberries, and a splash of orange tangerine juicy juice. Dinner was plain meat with salt and pepper, steamed veggies, and brown rice. Coconut milk ice cream for a treat.

Just be careful with substitutes as many babies with dairy intolerance also react to soy, which is in many of the substitutes. Probably try cutting both dairy and soy at first to see if dairy is the culprit, then try to introduce soy and see if soy is acceptable.

We were Milk and Soy intolerant. Apparently the soy was worse since he is still intolerant to soy. We did use dairy alternatives such as almond and coconut milk and daiya cheese. But we were much more on the whole real foods diet. I did a total elimination diet to start so nothing but sweet potatoes, zuchini, turkey and rice for a while.

I recommend Paleo recipes. We tried a lot of them.

Did you eat dairy substitutes? What were your favorite dishes? Did you just stick to meat and veggies? Where did you buy your food?

Considering milk protein intolerance as a plausible cause for lo's issues and so far I have been living off sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts....
