@daniellemybelle: yea I made an appointment for a weighted feed but couldn't get in until next Wednesday. I also weighed her today (just on our home scale). I know it isn't super accurate but I thought I could maybe at least tell if she gains somewhat in the meantime.

We struggled with this too. We never stopped supplementing but at a certain point I did start following LO's lead more instead of always offering a bottle.

Ultimately, the best way to know other than diapers is 1) weight checks and 2) weighed feedings. Could you see your LC again & do a weighed feeding? When LO started cutting back on formula at about 10 weeks we did a weighed feeding & she only transferred 2.5 oz so I knew that EBF was still not in the cards. At the same time, if she acted happy & full after nursing, I didn't always offer a bottle. The amount we have supplemented has ebbed & flowed as she's had growth spurts and such.

Good luck!

@Mae: no joke, but every time I buy a box at Costco (58$!!!), I dream about what kind of frivolous thing I could have spent the money on... new jeans, a dress... etc hahahaha... how I toture myself :)

@tysonja: omg seriously. I was shocked at how expensive formula is. And the last few day washing far fewer bottles and no pump parts? Heaven.

@Mae: hopefully another good sign like you said! :)

i'll try again when we have another baby eventually... maybe they won't be huge hungry boys like the two I have currently! insatiable! :)

I have nothing against formula (thank god for formula...), but I could do without the cost :). and washing bottles :)

@twodoghouse: have you tried the Medela gel pads? Omfg amzzzzzing. Especially if you put them in the fridge first.

@tysonja: oh that is the other thing. She used to nurse as long as I'd let her, 20-30 min + per side. Now she often pops off afterb10-15 per side. Hopefully another good sign. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you though!

oh wow!!! that sounds awesome! if she is refusing the bottle I'd just stop cold turkey for now and nurse nurse nurse to keep up your supply :)

for both my kids we started supplementing pretty much exactly the same way you described, for the same reasons, but for us they just kept needing more and more formula every week (also, nursing about 30mins+first, then a bottle, for every feed). eventually (around 7 months) they both just switched to completely formula and I dried up because they were smart enough to realize they were not getting much from bf'ing.

your situation sounds amaaazzing!!! go mama!

@Kemma: could be? Or maybe a combo. As of my last lc appt at 4 weeks (prior to clipping) I was pumping on avg 1 ounce combined every 2-3 hrs but she was able to remove 70ml. As of this weekend I was up to 2-3 ounces combines every 2-3 hrs pumping. So with better latch I guess it's possible she's getting 4+ ounces from me? I have an appt for a weighted feed next wed. Wish I could've got in this week!

@twodoghouse: I hope so! And I hope you get there. Maybe ditching the shield will help you!

@Mae: I'm just thinking that rather than having terribly low supply it was more an issue of inefficient transferring that was the problem? It could be that she's nursing more efficiently so your supply is perfectly good! Yay for it going well!

Wow that is awesome if your supply has gotten good enough to EBF! (I'm totally jealous!) I've wondered this same thing, hoping we might someday get to EBF, but my LOs suck down their formula bottles and cry if it takes too long to go from breast to bottle. So I get the feeling they def. aren't getting enough from me. Good job mama and Fia!

@jetsa: yea I hope I'm just being paranoid. After all of our issues if my supply has really increased and boom I'm able to just ebf at this point it is wonderful! But I guess it just seems too good to be true so I fear she is not eating enough. But she definitely let us know before when she was hungry... So the fact that she is not screaming seems like a good sign. :)

@Mae: that's great. We use cloth as well! :) If you are changing every 2 hours in cloth and they are always wet, I'd guess she is getting enough, I wish I knew a more direct way for you to know. I hated the constant question of is he hungry etc

@jetsa: we use cloth so it's sort of hard to tell since there is no blue strip (we just change every 2 hrs or if we hear her poo) and they are heavy anyways so it's hard to tell wet from heavy wet. I actually have had her in disposables all day today to check this though. So far 2 heavy wet, 2 medium wet, 1 lightly wet, and 3 poos. So that seems okay(ish? I think?)

Truthfully there is no way to know. Her attitude would tell me she's full. How are her diapers (# of wet/dry a day)?

How were you sure your baby was eating enough? Brief history for those who haven't seen my 400 breastfeeding posts: started supplementing lo at 3 weeks when we realized I had low supply. For two weeks prior she screamed all the time. As soon as we started supplementing she was much happier. I then ended up having to mostly ep+supplement for a few weeks. At 5 weeks lo had her posterior tongue tie and lip tie clipped.

She is now 7.5 weeks and the last 3 days I've breastfed her almost every meal for the first time in almost a month. Immediately she started refusing formula. When we first started supplementing I'd bf her and give her a bottle after and she wld suck it down. Now she wants nothing to do with bottles mostly. She was taking 10-15 ounces of formula in addition to my pumped milk. Tuesday she took only 4 ounces of formula on top of bf. Wednesday she took 7 ounces on top of bf. today so far she has taken no formula at all. I keep offering and she pushes the bottle out of her mouth. She seems perfectly happy.

Is it likely that my supply has just increased enough that she doesn't need formula anymore? It just seems so sudden to go from 10-15 ounces formula to 0-7 in a day. I thought it would be more gradual. I just worry she isn't eating enough!
