@septemberlove: I didn't think about that one! I know I've been super bloated this last week and I think that's why! Too much salt in my diet!

@blackbird: I love you idea of just starting out having days without them! It's a good idea to get my food organized and figure out what I'm doing and what I can eat. I have a very hard time eating veggies so this would really be a BIG change for me! I'm looking forward to feeling better if I can just make it through this part, the hard part!

@Bao: I read somewhere recently that many women crave sugar while breastfeeding, not good! haha

@BabyBoecksMom: I like your novel! I've thought about counting calories but since I'm breastfeeding I'm not sure how many I'm supposed to eat a day or even how much I was eating before. I did weight watchers at one point and I did the same thing you did with cutting out the mayo! It made me realize a lot of similar things to that and it just wasn't worth the points to me.

@Baby Boy Mom: I don't want to feel like crap anymore! I must get to the end result! I've love to cut out all processed stuff...

@JoJoGirl: It's so true, unfortunately! Wow! 35 lbs is a TON for just one change!

@MaisyMay: I bet! I LOVE my chocolate...it shall be quite a challenge!

@Mrs. Superhero: I'm not sure if I'm ready to cut wheat out just yet. I would love to but I think I will work on sugar and move on to wheat next. I can't believe how many things have wheat that you would never expect!

@bree72: Haha, your post made me laugh! I'm sure I will be pretty miserable to start with too! We can still be miserable together ;)

@Mrs. Bee: You guys rock! I can't imagine cutting out all you guys have! I'm not ready to do more than one but if I am able to cut out sugar, I will be moving on to wheat next! I love cheese so I can't imagine cutting out dairy...ahh! Do you happen to know how long it takes to stop craving something after you stop eating it?

@msmay: I have cut out sweets before, not all processed sugar, and after I definitely had more control over it! Then somehow I ended up being terrible again..lol

@LinzR: I can imagine it was! It's in SO many things I don't think people realize!

@mrbee: That's a lot to cut out! It seems to be working for you though, congratulations on losing that weight AND keeping it off! I noticed nothing you eat it sweet. Do you still eat fruit?

I wish I could eat sugar in moderation but I just don't have the discipline. I really believe I'm addicted to sugar at this point. The thing about moderation is who decided how much is "in moderation"! Do you eat a little less than normal, the serving size, what do people tell yourself! That's another reason why I don't think I could do that.

I have celiac so cut out wheat by requirement, not a choice :-) But it was very hard to adjust. But you can do anything. Your body doesn't need gluten and has a difficult time processing it.
I'm not sure of the benefits of cutting out wheat just as a diet, but i can't imagine it would hurt!

I don't think I can ever cut something out of my diet unless I'm allergic and even then, I'll eat a little if its something i like. The more I try to cut out, the more I crave. Limiting my intake of unhealthy foods works better for me. But if I had to choose one of those, it's probably be the sugar.

I chose processed sugar. Sometimes moderation can be hard and cutting something out (temporarily) can kick start into the right direction. A long time I gave up soda for 2 months, and when I eventually started drinking it again, I had much more control over it and now I barely drink it/miss it! Good luck!

once you cut something out, you eventually stop craving it. i think processed sugars would be the easiest to cut out. wheat and dairy is really tough. we've cut out wheat, but dairy would be tough!

I picked wheat. But I'm going to try and go wheat free after the new year, so I'm biased and want people to be miserable with me. :)

And I found that if there's one thing that you regularly ingest that it terrible for you, just cutting that item out can make a huge difference. When I cut out sweet tea years ago, I lost 10 lbs within a couple of months doing nothing else. I drank a lot of sweet tea. Now I think it's gross and prefer unsweetened.

I would cut wheat, because when you cut wheat you are likely to replace it with more veggies and meat which is a healthier balance.

I would cut sugar too, but I bet wheat would make a bigger impact on your overall diet.

@mrbee: Agree! For some people sugar is like alcoholics and alcohol - they can't have a cookie, they have 10. I have worked with folks like that and they do need to treat sugar like alcoholics treat alcohol, it's the only way for them to not binge on it. ETA: This one particular person lost 35 lbs by cutting sugar entirely and not changing much else :)

There's a lot of mention of moderation, which I definitely support in most cases! I think it depends on whether or not you have an addiction or not though.

As for me, I have a serious sugar addiction. I don't think I'll ever be able to eat it in moderation, so it is easier for me to cut it out completely. Otherwise having just a little makes me want a lot more.

If you're not a sugarholic, then moderation may indeed be the way to go!

I vote processed everything, sugars in particular. Those are the things that make you feel like crap the most (unless you have some intolerance). I think there's sort of a withdrawal phase when you get rid of them, but the end result is worth it. Just get rid of one item at a time so that it's nice and slow.

@aMohror: It's all about balance. Like PP said, if you cut out something, you'll just want it more. But if you're going to start somewhere, start with sugars. Those are just empty calories. How about give yourself a "treat" if you've been good all day. By just doing that, it really makes a difference!

I actually counted calories to get my weight in check when I first started to work on my diet. (Note: women usually only burn about 1400 calories a day, not including exercise) I had an app on my phone that kept track of what I was eating. Once I saw where I was losing calories to, I started cutting out things. Like, I used to put mustard and mayo on my sandwich. But, that mayo was extra calories that I could put towards something else. So now I just make my sandwiches with mustard.

Sorry for the novel ;-)

I chose work on making better choices. You can still have all that stuff, but it's all in moderation. If you cut it all out cold turkey you will just crave it more and probably indulge too much then. I breastfeed and go through periods of wanting tons of sugar, I'm not sure why that happens.

I would cut processed sugars and wheat, for sure. Including all processed foods. What if you tried having "sugar free/wheat free days"? This way you aren't going cold turkey, but you can experiment with a few meals a week that don't involve grains or sugar. When you cut out processed foods, too, you will be fuller in general. Greek yogurt with honey (i know it's a sugar, but it's not "the same" to me) and fruit makes a very filling snack. More so than crackers and cheese ever will.

You'll detox out of both of them, though. But once you wean yourself off them, the cravings are gone. But it's very hard to get over the hump! But once you do, you will feel amazing! Your body will work more efficiently and you'll break the sluggish cycle.

@mrbee, 30-40 pounds is very impressive!

@aMohror: Yah I cut out processed sugar, wheat and am also cutting back on dairy (haven't completely made the leap there yet). Overall, I've lost about 30-40 pounds and kept it off for a few years!

I feel like a much better role model for the kids, which is my primary motivator. I eat a lot of veggies (fresh and cooked), chicken, eggs and fish. For snacks, we cut up celery, mushrooms or cucumbers and dip them in a mayo/Tabasco combo.

@mrbee: I was thinking of cutting out processed sugars because I want to get to the point where I don't crave all the junk! I want to want to crave fruit or something much more healthy! After I eat candy or ice cream or something similar I always feel like crap because I gave in and also I just feel gross! My LO is 4 months and I want to make these changes now, if I'm going to, so once she is eating I don't have to change her eating habits! Also, I obviously want her to eat healthy and not see my eating like crap...lol Haven't you been cutting things from your diet? What do you end up eating mostly? Do Charlie and Olive eat the same?

If you tell yourself it's "cut", that will definitely create an obsession. I'd suggest trying to cut back, ie setting limits for yourself, like "I get one ice cream per week".. then you still get the treat in moderation and it puts you in the driver's seat of when you get to have it vs. when you'd rather wait. Cutting out a food item can feel like someone else is 'imposing' their rules on us, which makes us want to rebel! But if you get to be more in charge, it can help with the mental game. Then as you eat those sugars less often, you'll want them less often and find it's easier to say no.

Exactly--everyone needs to be on board for it to work. I know that if I tried to cut one thing, I'd just want it! Everything is okay in moderation.

@Mrs. J: That's what I'm thinking! I've tried to cut things out before and I just end up only wanting that thing! But then I hear from other people that they felt so much better once they cut out ______. With my husband not on board I think that would be very difficult though!

Processed sugars can be really bad for you, especially if you are sensitive to them! That said, I've heard that wheat can have an even bigger impact on blood sugar than sugar itself!

I would cut out either one, and then once that sticks... try cutting out the other!
