Vote to keep the style of the home. I personally love homes that aren't cookie cutter & that have character. Ours was built in the early 30's and I like that the character of it has been upheld and especially love our original but refinished large porcelain kitchen sink.

voted for cake...because i don't want to pay for someone else's bad taste. so with an older home, i'd like no renovations done so i can make it my own. ("my own" would be in keeping with the original architectural style of the home).

I think it depends on whether the original style is in keeping with my taste. I loooove old architecture and have lived in some great old spaces (our current apartment was built in 1905!). So if it was from an era with good taste, I'd redo to that standard with some modern touches added. If it was built in the 70s or 80s though, I'd probably want to redo completely.

I do hate that so many renos these days just update to today's suburbia standard. We looked at a bunch of cool old apartments in Brooklyn that were renovated to look like McMansions (dark granite counters, dark wood cabinets, stainless steel appliances, just not much character...no offense to anyone who likes that look) and it was upsetting!

I think that it totally depends on your taste. We just bought a 100 year old home that has some updates, some old updates and some original character. I would like to gut it all eventually but save the stained glass. That's all I really am partial to in this place!

I like keeping the feel of an older home, but with some modern amendments. We have an older home (1947) and we have mostly stuck with the older style but have done some updates, like new gas fireplaces.

We bought an older home, and they have updated in the past but now it is looking old again because it has been a while. I like traditional styles, but still modern....if that makes sense.

It kind of irks me when someone takes a dated/traditional home and tacks on a few random super-modern details just because that's their taste. For instance, I saw a home that was really meant to be traditional and the kitchen was pretty outdated, but they added very thin sleek cabinet pulls and a mosaic backsplash - which only made things look more awkward.

@zippylef: hmm...I guess it depends on if you have resale in mind or if you really want it to be YOUR style no matter what. I think you can make a combination of the styles flow, it just may not be someone else's taste, if that makes sense?

Ours was a bit of both. The major original charm was preserved, but it got new floors, modern kitchen and beautiful updates that preserve the era's look.

@babyjmama: I guess to clarify.

By "modern" I mean just putting in whatever renos the person likes with no regard to the overall architecture/style of the house versus renovating with the style/age of the home in mind and trying to incorporate it.

@mrsyoyo so true. Our house has crown molding everywhere-even in the closets and it would be a shame to see them go.

I voted contemporary but I say that because of two things, I like traditional styles with modern conveniences and think it looks nice to have new/old together.

We are moving into a home built in 1958. It was custom built for a now-huge philanthropist's parents back then so it has a lot of really neat custom touches. Originally I wished it had been more modern but now I really like the original style of the home.

I always think it's nice when someone respects the general vibe of the home. There area lot of lovely ways to update something while keeping the charm of the original. I mean, if there is lovely molding and stained glass, it's such a shame for people to rip that out and go completely mod/sterile.

Do you prefer when someone does modern renovations in an older home or when someone does updates/reno but sticks with the age and style of the home? Or does it not matter to you?
