Thanks for the suggestions, everyone!

We ended up going yesterday afternoon, and thankfully it was a successful trip. (found what we wanted, store wasn't too busy, lines weren't terrible, and the meatballs were good :silly: )

It was a 2 hour drive, so I'm very happy the trip went smoothly!

Take a bag. All of the Ikeas that I have been to have you buy the big blue bag if you don't have your own and need a bag. We've gotten to where we take the cart out to the car and toss everything in the trunk, but taking a bag would be so much easier.

My biggest tip is to download their app and check in advance whether things you want are in stock or not! And sign up for their Ikea Family Card! And definitely try not to go on the weekends, it's sooo crowded.

Love the meatballs! DH also enjoys the cinnamon buns.

Ikea is great for random stuff like felt for the bottom of your chairs, light bulbs, power strips, picture frames. We always buy random stuff like that when we go. They also have a packaging and lightbulb recycling bin at ours. So bring your styrofoam, dead cfls, etc.

@anonysquire: lol!

I don't go to IKEA a lot these days, but when I do I like to look around the whole showroom to get inspiration...and then I head to the market place. I used to get way too many candles and now Dh has imposed a candle ban until I use the ones I already have :(

Plan on spending 2-3 hours there. Eat a meal in the restaurant (meatballs, yes!) either at the beginning or middle of your time there. Walk through all of the show rooms. Budget for the fact that you will most likely buy all sorts of stuff you never knew you wanted or needed.

Eat before you go! Or eat when you get there- too much to do on an empty stomach, especially if you're pregnant. I love their nursery changing pads and covers, such a great deal. Also I would stroll through the kids toys/accessories and home accessories...you never know what you'll find that you "needed" !

Just remember that most everything you buy has to be put together. :) I can be overwhelming when you get home if you buy multiples pieces that require assembly. I really like their high chair, toys, smocks (use them as long-sleeve bibs), safety stuff and home decor (candles, plants, etc.).

First time to Ikea - fun! I always end up walking out with a bunch of random decor items... candles, picture frames, stuff like that.

@Mrs. Coral: Very true! I've never ever had help from the employees with lifting and loading things. Luckily I've always had help from random friendly strangers who didn't want to watch me struggle :)

@Mrs. Coral: DH is coming with so we should be able to manage between the two of us. But good to know not to expect help from the employees!

@charmed: I just went for the first time yesterday! I got the same dresser. Bring muscles. My mom and I (6 months preggers) never got one iota of help loading our cart and our car with the furniture we bought. In fact, two Ikea employees basically got in our way/watched us. Next time we're bringing our men!

They have some really good outlet covers that are dirt cheap and nearly impossible even for adults to remove (but they come with a remover). I also like their little plug in night lights. They also make really good band aids (who would have thought?!) in both clear for adults and fun patterns for kids. Clearly, I spend too much time in their safety aisle. :silly: Pick up a few waterproof crib mattress protectors too. Maybe a plastic bathtub for when your LO is a bit older?

What would you recommend buying/looking at?

We're going to pick up a Hemnes dresser for the nursery and some bookshelves for my office.
Any suggestions for other nursery items to look at while we're there? Or tips for an Ikea newbie? :silly:
