Having the middle child be the only one of their gender would give them something special to identify with, since middle children sometimes have a tough time. The firstborn can be the leader, then the youngest can be the baby. And I'd rather have more boys than girls. I'm biased, of course, because I grew up with all boys and have no idea what a sisterly bond is like! I never really longed for one, either. I also like the idea of the girl being protected by both an older and younger brother...!
