Next time I'm going to have a scheduled c-section (no way for a VBAC) and I'll have to convince DH to go for team green. Since the excitement of *when* the baby comes is cancelled out with a scheduled birth, we might as well be excited about the *what* it is!
I wish I could still have my same OB, though.

If it went exactly the same, I'd be perfectly happy. I loved my OB and hope he delivers us again, the epidural was great, and I had an excellent hospital experience. I hope to have the baby avoid jaundice next time (unavoidable- different blood types, plus a big bruise on the head), but even that turned out to be a positive experience.

@Anagram: What's funny/sad is that I had DH, my mom, my MIL and FIL all in the room with me as the epidural stopped working. I think my DH was too overwhelmed and "trust the system" to push for anything, my ILs were just too grateful to be allowed to be there to rock a boat, and my mom is very laid-back, go with the flow and was really concentrating on helping me breathe. DH and I have talked about it since and he's expressed a lot of regret for not pushing it, and if we decide to have another LO I will be sure to let him know when something is unacceptable to me and he'll be my advocate.

@FutureMrsMcK: the advocate is a just! That's why I'm so glad (in the end) that my mom was there because she gets things done. My husband is more of a "trust the system" type of guy, but my mom would just march down to the nurses station and tell them what I needed it, how I needed it, and would politely ask them to get on it right then.

I would try a different hospital. And if my labor stalls again, I would get Pitocin sooner..

I progressed from 3-5 cm really quickly, but then stayed at 5 cm for....almost 10 hours. Yup! All because after 2 or so hours when the doctor told me I wasn't progressing and asked if I wanted to try Pitocin, I told him I'd like to wait and see if my body would do it on its own. Then he had two emergency C sections...and I didn't end up progressing or being ble to get the Pitocin till 10 pm that night. Then I had my LO by a little past midnight, so it went so quickly after I had the pit, I regret not doing it sooner.

I don't know.

All of things that I'd like to do differently are things that I had no real control over. Constantly sick and not putting on any weight, and SCH that never bled but caused me constant pain whenever I moved, back labor, two failed epidurals and a massive pp hemorrhage upon delivery.

We may or may not be TG. I'd probably make a better effort to be in better shape going in/be more active. I'd be a better advocate for myself in the delivery room (or have someone else be a better advocate for me--when my first epi stopped working the nurse on duty sort of blew me off, telling me that feeling pressure was normal--but it wasn't pressure, it was the full-force of every flippin back contraction...).

@grizz: Wow. I'm so sorry hon!

And yes, it was totally validating for me, too. I remember when the anesthesiologist finally came in -- he was furious(!) that anyone had let me go that long with that much pain . . . I was so relieved to know that I hadn't imagined that it was worse than what it was.

@Dandelion: I would do the exact same thing in your situation! Sending you lots of healthy pregnancy dust!

In my case I would love to avoid induction and if possible have my unmediated water birth next time BUT I am also WAY more chill about getting the epidural. I will do my best but I did love the relief of it and in my case it helped me progress I think so in more if my hoyty toyty natural birth high horse. I'd also like to have breast feeding go as smoothly as it did with Tor. He is 11 months and we are still going strong with minimal incidence. Next time I will allow family at the birth (what a drama and fuss there was over that) and they can also help with Tor while we are managing a new baby. Oh and I wil also see my EDD as a very rough estimate and call it my birth week. I was mental when that day arrived. I'd love to put on less weight (50lbs) and be more active this time but I'm not gonna drive myself crazy either because my son came out so healthy and strong.

I'm doing a ton differently. I started out in a birth center with S, having to transfer, where I got a parade of interventions to get her out.

This time around, I'm scheduling a c section at 39 weeks if I don't go into labor before on my own. If I do go into labor on my own before, I'm going to consider an epidural. I won't lie, it's a scary thought, but I don't want to jeopardize my baby in anyway.

I have time to make any real choices, though.

Next time I'd like to not put on so much weight. I'd like to look into having a midwife instead of an OB. I had no problems with my OB.

Also I'd introduce the bottle earlier so I can actually get a break. Almost 5 months and he won't take one.

@MsLipGloss: My OB said that in all her years of practice, she has never felt as badly for a patient as she did for me, and that my birth was a little traumatic even for *her*. That kind of made me feel better in a weird way. I guess I feel validated for not being the only one to think it was a totally horrible experience?

I wouldn't try to have an unmedicated vaginal birth at a hospital again. The staff was clear they didn't expect me to succeed and the triage nurse called my attempt stupid. Somehow I managed to let that roll off my back at the time but it really irks me now.

It probably sounds strange but I don't know if I would do a home birth/birth center unmedicated or a hospital birth with a more lax attitude about interventions. Just not "natural" at a hospital again.

I was very happy with everything the way it turned out. Labor was fairly quick, with an epi. I might change doctors/hospitals because I felt like he was a little "been there, done that" during pregnancy. However, during labor he was great so I don't know...

I had a pretty easy delivery with lo so hoping it will be mostly the same for number 2 - but hoping to go into labor naturally and without an induction. Also planning to transfer to a birth center after birth (if all goes well) because my after care in hospital last time was horrible. Also hoping to use water for pain relief next time.

The only thing is change is having a better grasp on breast feeding. I really wanted to, and attribute my lack of knowledge to my inability. I am 100% pro-formula feeding, too, but want to give BFing a better shot next time.

My LO is only 3 months old, but I think about this a lot. We were TG, and it was wonderful, but I kinda want to know what it's like to know who's inside me for half of my pregnancy, so we may find out next time. I had a pain-med-free birth, and while I'm very happy with my experience and I know I could do it again, I am not dead set against trying an epidural next time. I know a couple moms who had an epidural after a natural birth, and I get that. :) But, I'm not going to worry about it. I stressed so much about labor & delivery during my pregnancy. I will relax, enjoy my pregnancy, eat better and walk more next time!

If I could have the exact same birth, I'd take it. Minus the terrible cold I had. Things would have been so much better if I could have breathed! I held off as long as I could to get the epi, so I'm happy that I actually got to feel real contractions... although I wouldn't have said it at the time. My epi was perfect. I could still move and feel... it just didn't hurt... so hard to explain. I only pushed for like 30-40 minutes. Baby was perfect, nursing went well..... it was still difficult... but we figured it out.

I found out the gender last time... and will next time too. Not knowing would drive me crazy.

Completely!

First time I went with an obgyn, found out, and while I *wanted* a natural, low intervention birth I got an intervention heavy cesarean delivery.

Second time around we didn't find out, I was significantly more informed on the process of birth so I went with a midwife, planned an hbac, and got a vbac.

This time I'm planning another hbac (different MW) and still feel very strongly about not taking the risk of inhibiting the process of birth by unnecessary interventions... we also aren't finding out again. :)

We found out the gender (we were team green with the first).

I did not get an epidural right away. I waited until I needed it. This was because of my experience with failed epidurals from the first time around.

I was induced at 39 weeks due to GD (wasn't with the first) so I received pitocin both times... I was hoping not to, in case it stalls labor, but my labor with #1 was slow while with #2 it was super fast.

I ate on the way to the hospital!

I ate during labor!

I watched tv during labor (for some weird reason I did not with the first even though it was 3x as long).

I brought makeup and a cute hospital gown to the hospital. I also brought my boppy.

I sent the baby to the nursery whenever I could, and got lots of sleep.

I gave formula right away. With my first I didn't until he was inconsolably crying for hours after we went home from the hospital... and then I found out after going to the pediatrician that he had lost a whole pound. :(

I'm sure there's more...!!

ETA: oh yes, I did yoga during pregnancy!

I'll be more proactive about my ITP so that I can hopefully get an epidural next time!

And I'll try not to gain as much weight, haha.

I should have mentioned I would do most of it the same. I loves my midwife practice and the hospital where I delivered- I really couldn't have had a better team there. Unless we nice really far away I'd go with them again for sure.

The funny thing is, c is only two weeks old and I really cannot remember what contractions felt like. I can remember the early ones, and I definitely remember the pushing and the ring of fire, but the late contractions I don't remember!

I'll have a scheduled c since my doctor doesn't think I'm a candidate for a vbac. I certainly won't spend all that time researching and planning a natural birth lol. Other than that, I don't think I'll do much differently. I like feeling as in control as possible so I'll keep with the same types of restrictions, except maybe allowing myself a small amount of caffeine!

@Smurfette: Ditto! AND, I would kick all of the unnecessary medical staff out of the delivery room! It was crazy busy and so distracting!

@grizz: When I started seeing someone for PPD, she confirmed just how horrific my birth experience was (so that I would understand that it would have been difficult for 99% of the population, not just me) and that she would have been floored if I had made it through that without any issues. ((hugs))
