I wore my own gown until literally the anesthesiologist showed up for my epidural (hour 50 of my induction, 7 cm) I changed into the hospital gown while he prepped.

Post baby I wore their gown... Didn't want to ruin mine... But I did wear my own robe over it.

Well, my water ended up breaking while I was waiting to be admitted, so then I ended up in a gown. I wouldn't imagine it would be a problem so long as you wear something that allows them to easily check on you and the baby, but no harm in asking ahead of time just to be sure or see if they have outfits they prefer. I doubt they'll care about the top, but may be more picky about the bottom for obvious reasons.

I did change into my own clothes afterwards. Never thought to ask and no one mentioned it.

I had to wear the gown because I was induced and had all sorts of wires on me but would've been allowed to wear my own clothing if I wasn't induced. I wanted to wear my sports bra but the nurse said I'd have to take it off for an epidural and/or she'd have to cut it off if I needed an emergency c-section. I went free under my gown even though I hate it.

Can you ask ahead of time? You're planning to go unmedicated and be moving so I don't see why they'd refuse.. Anyway what are they going to do if you don't wear the gown?

I opted for the gown but kept my favourite warm, fuzzy socks on during labour. I had to throw those out after :silly: Next time I will remember to take my bra off though, it was a hassle after she was born trying to have DH and the nurse wiggle the bra off of me so I could lay her on my bare chest.

No one cared. They did take the skirt off when I was really in the throws of pushing but I never had to put the gown on and kept the sports bra on the whole time.

No one has the right to tell you what to wear unless it is for surgery as the hospital laundry is done at really high temps to prevent infection but if you think they will give yoy a hard time can you ask DH/birth partner to advocate for you?

Well I'd asked my midwives ahead of time so I knew I could. When I got there though I didn't have my bag (didn't expect to be induced... went in for a check up and they wouldn't let me leave) so I had to do the hospital gown first. Once my bag got there I asked if I could put on my own nightgown and they said sure if I didn't mind it getting ruined (and I didn't). So I put it on. But then once I decided to get an epidural I had to put the gown back on because they needed my back to be totally exposed.

Nope. My MWs told me to bring whatever I was comfortable in - but I opted by the gown because it was so easy and cozy.

I was admitted after my water broke on a Friday night and they asked me to change into a gown. I didn't feel like fussing so I did. When labor didn't kick in by the next morning I changed into my own clothes and labored in those while we induced until Sunday morning. I ended up finishing in my own (wide open) robe. Nobody after the first nurse even mentioned a hospital gown. Or if they did I wasn't listening. :-)

I was in hard labor and totally burning up (labor is difficult, sweaty work!) when I got to the hospital. I was wearing a sleep nursing bra, tank, and yoga pants. They asked if I wanted a gown and it looked so big and heavy and hot that I said no. I just took off my pants and undies and stayed that way the whole time. They didn't care at all. And I was way beyond the point of caring about being half naked in front of a bunch of strangers. :silly:

I was asked when I arrived at the hospital if I wanted to wear their gown or my own clothes. I opted for the gown because I didn't want body fluids, etc on my own clothes (who knew when I would get to doing the laundry) and I wanted to be totally skin to skin when DS was born and the gown seems the easiest to get off. No regrets. The next day I changed into my own clothes

ETA: I showed up to the hospital in active labor and labor to delivery was 9 hours. Had I been induced or had a longer labor I would've worn my own clothes for awhile.

I didn't want to put on the gown, at least right away, but my first intake nurse was a royal bitch and like argued me down about it. Seeing as I was having contraction after contraction, I didn't have much fight in me but I was pretty pissed.

She also made me remove meybra which upset me because I HATE having my boobs flopping around.

She was horrible. Which is why I'm still bitter 11 months later.

I didn't have the choice (or desire) because of my c section, but the second time I went in for my gall bladder I refused the gown for my own clothes. No one gave me a hard time. The only time it was non negotiable was when I was headed to surgery.

Did you ask permission, or just never put on the hospital gown? Did the nurses give you a hard time about it? Did they refuse to let you?

Wearing a nursing sleep bra and a yoga skirt sounds way better than a hospital gown, to me. But I don't see myself putting up a fight about it! (although I just took off my gown while pushing last time...)
