I went cold turkey and just kept him to until 12:30 the first few days and 1 after that. He slept we least 2 hours every time and he's been sleeping longer at night! He used to wake up at 6am and he's been sleeping in until 7:30! What I did for awhile was limit the morning nap to only 30-45 minutes, so she would be tired enough for an afternoon nap. Then when she started refusing morning nap, I was able to just hold her off until after lunch.
