Ours just broke and we replaced it last week. It's been a beastly hot and humid summer in NY.

I agree with @Truth Bombs. I think you should start saving now to replace the unit. No sense in throwing money into a unit that will need to be replaced in a year anyways. We had the same thing happen where last summer we had ours charged but when it broke again this summer we decided to bite the bullet and replace instead of just putting another band-aid on it. Also, you may be able to get a better deal if you have it replaced during the winter/early spring before they get really busy during the summer months.

We would have to replace it, or make due with a few window units, which would be fine for me. My husband, though, would consider this "roughing it" and would be calling a repair man immediately.

Personally, we can't live without a/c, but we have delayed a large appliance purchase because we just didn't use it that much. Often you can finance large appliances for 0% or little interest over a year or a couple years. DH reminds me to weigh the return in a savings account vs the cost to finance. That may be an option unless you are really set on paying for it at once.

Everyone is answering based on their own info, but I'll answer based on your situation. Given that you say you don't use your A/C daily anyway, it sounds like it's not super hot where you are and you feel like you can survive the rest of the summer. It seems silly to put money into a old unit when it would be better suited to put that money towards a new one, and it sounds like you need a little time to save up before you can afford the new one. So I would probably tough it out in your situation. You could always buy a window unit for your bedroom and let the girls sleep in there with you if you have a few bad nights.

Yes I would get it fixed - I can't stand the heat, and we're in a stacked townhouse Nd only have windows on one side. We came home from my parents last week and with no AC on, upstairs was up to 30 Celsius. Stinkin hot!

Yes, I consider this the peak of summer. We are about to have another heat wave (though, it's nothing compared to what the east coast is having) and we just bought an AC unit for our bedroom.

Depends what your savings would be. We bought a window ac unit for 100 for sleeping so we didn't have to pay extra and could take time and figure out if we wanted to repair, replace, or put in a completely diff system

We recently had ours serviced. It looks ok for now, but it's old. The technician mentioned that the company runs specials once or twice a year. Do you think any local companies would let you know when their next promotion will be?

I had mine replaced around Labor Day one year. It kept leaking Freon and the costs to repair that was out of hand. I decided just to get it over with and replace the unit.

I can't live without AC for even a day when it's hot. And since we would have to have it for the next summer I would just bite the bullet and fix/replace it now so we could use it now and get the most value out of it.

If you can be comfortable with out it, then NBD. But I think without AC I'd still feel like we needed to buy all sorts of fans, and then that's a waste of money when the AC is fixed. But then AC is one of the few things I'd go into debt over if I had to.

Honestly, we'd probably try to tough it out for a few days and then wind up calling. We are big wimps sent heat and humidity. The other issue is allergies for us, windows open really makes my husband's allergies go nuts.

We use our AC year around, so yes, I'd have it fixed asap unless there was some financial reason for waiting a while. I've heard that prices for AC related stuff are higher in the summer time so I'd like to avoid any of those fees. Sorry you are in this bummer of a situation!

Would you pay to get it looked at/fixed or just tough it out for the rest of the summer?

We have an old central air unit and it just went out. It really just needs to be replaced, which we *may* try and do next spring, if the budget allows. In the meantime though, we are debating just going without so we aren't paying to have it fixed for just a few more weeks of use. We don't run our AC daily anyway, just when it's unbearable. We had our AC go out last year and the guy came and charged it for us and didn't give us a bill, but I'm not sure this would be the same issue this year or not...
