I had mothers intuition that it was only because he was really stuck but I wanted to try everything for a vaginal delivery so I opted for the ECV. It was the most painful experience of my life and ultimately he did not budge. I personally wouldn't do it again but if you're long torso'd and your baby has frequently switched positions it might be worth it. The actual ECV itself literally took less than thirty seconds to do and I didn't experience any pain.</p> <p>I chose to do the ECV as the risk rate at the hospital I went to was only 0.05%, which I considered very low risk considering my only alternative was a scheduled c-section. I was required to fast from midnight (8am appointment) and after thirty minutes of foetal monitoring I was given Ventolin through an IV before being tipped slightly backwards and the ECV started. It was with my first. They didn't place an epidural, but they do them right by the OR in case something happens. The risk of an emergency c-section was not in my view too high to attempt it, although I don't recall the exact statistic. I do recall that the risk was less than the regular risks of having a c-section. I did get the drug that relaxes the uterus. </p> <p>The ECV was painful and felt very strange, but it was not as bad as I had heard. They were only actively attempting to rotate her for maybe 45 seconds, and they tried twice. My son was transverse my entire pregnancy without any room to turn because his sister was taking up all of the space. We decided to try an external version once DD was delivered in the hope that I could deliver him vaginally as well. (With twins delivering breech is not a major problem because the first baby "paves the way" so to speak, so it didn't matter which way he turned as long as he moved out of transverse). Anyway, I was already in the OR because that's where twins had to be delivered at my hospital and I had an epidural (which had been failing, but they refreshed it right then so I was pretty numb). I had midwives present and an ultrasound tech who was monitoring his position. They wouldn't do it on me since I was transverse oblique breech. Meaning he's completely sideways with his head a little bit heads up near my left rib and his feel near my right hip.</p> <p>They definitely don't do rotations with transverse babies because first... it makes it more difficult to push the baby around and it's likely they will turn back that position even if they were successful. Since they have so much room to be sideways in the first place. So I was sent home.</p> <p>I was scheduled for a csection for 39 weeks but they preformed the ECV right before I was suppose to have the csection.</p> <p>It worked! It didn't hurt at all. I didn't even have the drug they normally give you to loosen you up because if it didn't work I would have to go in for my csection that had it's own set of drugs I would need and they didn't want the drugs to interfere with each other.</p> <p>They induced labor right away so he wouldn't flip back.</p> <p>I still had an emergency csetion after 24 hours of being induced because he was having heart rate issues during my contractions. It was what it was. </p> <p>Edit : Some scary stuff happened to me during this birth but I don't think it was because of the ECV.</p> <p>It was my second kid so maybe why it didn't hurt? It didn't work and she had to have a c-section but hearing her talk about it pretty much cemented in my mind I would never want to try one. She was frank breech and her butt was stuck in my pelvis. My dr said they lift up her butt and push down on her head so your lo being high might help. They also said frank breech is the hardest to turn. Additionally, they said you have a much better success rate if you're a second or third time mom because your uterus is stretchy. Her son was breech and they decided that at 39 weeks that would place an epidural and do an ECV, if it was successful, they would immediately induce, if not, they would go forward with a c section. Her LO responded really really poorly to the ECV and she did as well. They had to do a pretty scary emergency C section. Everyone was OK in the end but the experience was pretty terrifying for both her and her husband. If so, when did you get it, did it hurt, and did it work? </p> <p>33 weeks and babe is still breech (frank, I think, from what I'm feeling), and very high. My OBs aren't terribly concerned, except the perinatologist said my placenta is anterior and very high, and baby girl has been snuggling into it since about 24 weeks or so. </p> <p>I know she still has time to turn. I have another ultrasound on the 23rd, and if she's still breech we'll talk about getting an ECV, I'm just curious about experiences with it. Dave is concerned about the umbilical cord, although I imagine they would check to see if that could be compromised at all before they start.... </p>
